Song of the Day #2,027: ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home’ – Drake

drake_nothing_was_the_sameIn the fifth spot on the Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll is Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ (actually, it tied for fourth with yesterday’s Kanye track).

Coming in at #6 is ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home’ by Drake.

I haven’t heard much by Drake, but I know he’s considered the bee’s knees by critics and fans alike. I was impressed by his recent Saturday Night Live appearance (the comedy anyway… I didn’t watch the musical performances).

This song came as a bit of a surprise. I figured it would be a rap but it’s actually a mid-tempo R&B jam. I like the sound, but it’s nothing special. I’m always perplexed by some of the songs that strike a nerve with critics despite their ordinariness (the songs’, not the critics’).

[Verse]
I got my eyes on you, you’re everything that I see
I want your hot love and emotion endlessly
I can’t get over you, you left your mark on me
I want your hot love and emotion endlessly

[Hook]
Cause you’re a good girl and you know it
You act so different around me
Cause you’re a good girl and you know it
I know exactly who you could be
Just hold on, we’re going home
Just hold on, we’re going home
It’s hard to do these things alone
Just hold on, we’re going home

[Verse + Hook]

[Bridge: Majid Jordan]
You’re the girl, you’re the one
Gave you everything I loved
I think there’s something, baby
I think there’s something, baby

[Hook]

Well, if the critics are going to heap praise upon a rap artist, I much prefer that they give that praise to Drake over Kanye. I like this song, though I agree it doesn’t immediately grab me as top 10 material.
