Song of the Day #1,956: ‘Another Story’ – The Head and the Heart

head_heart_lets_be_stillI don’t remember where I first heard about The Head and the Heart, but in typical fashion, once I did I immediately started hearing about them everywhere else.

This Seattle-based band is usually compared to the string of indie-folk groups that have dominated the musical landscape in recent years — the Mumford & Sons, Fleet Foxes and Avett Brothers of the world. Not bad company to be in, for sure.

This album is a little more lush and piano-based than those others, which I like. It taps into that melancholy spirit so dear to my heart.

That said, I need to give the record a few more listens before I know if it’s a keeper. As much as I appreciate the sounds as I hear them, they haven’t exactly stuck in my head after pressing stop.

I find that the best albums linger in my mind, calling me back for more. Other albums are perfectly lovely while they’re playing but otherwise just fade. I could see this one going either way.

These are just flames
Burning in your fireplace
I hear your voice and it seems
As if it was all a dream
I wish it was all a dream

Now I see a world
A world turning in on itself
Are we just like
Hungry wolves howling in the night
I don’t want no music tonight

Can we go on like it once was

Every time I hear another story
Oh the poor boy lost his head
Everybody feels a little crazy
But we go on living with it
Yeah we go on living with it

These are just flames
Burning in your fireplace
I hear your voice and it seems
As if it was all a dream
I wish it was a dream

Can we go on like it once was
Can we go on like it once was

Every time I hear another story
Oh the poor boy lost his head
Everybody feels a little crazy
But we go on living with it
Yeah we go on living with it

I’ll tell you one thing
We ain’t gonna change love
The sun still rises
Even through the pain
I’ll tell you one thing
We ain’t gonna change love
The sun still rises
Even through the pain

Can we go on like it once was
Can we go on like it once was
(Everybody feels a little crazy)
Like it once was
(Everybody feels a little crazy)
Like it once was

I’ve never heard of this band once, let alone everywhere. Maybe that will change now that you have put them on my radar?

I like their sound, but, if it doesn’t stick with you, it is perhaps because it is less commanding of your attention than the more aggressive sound of someone like Mumford & Sons.

Hmmm… I loved the opening few notes, but the overall sound did get sort of boring as the song played on. I see what you’re saying – this is perfectly pleasant, but I’m not sure I’d be compelled to come back for more.

Meanwhile, I, too, am curious if I will start hearing of this band now that you’ve put them on my radar, as they are not currently there. Nor are the Avett Brothers. Curious to know more about them now, too.
