I haven’t gotten around to reviewing or ranking Pink’s latest album, The Truth About Love, but when I do it will rank right up there with the best records I heard this year.
I’m relatively new to Pink — 2008’s Funhouse was the first of her albums I heard, and the only one before picking up The Truth About Love. Both of these records reveal a confident, talented, brazen woman with a powerhouse voice and great songwriting chops.
Truth is an even niftier accomplishment than the celebrated Funhouse, boasting muscular hooks, sly lyrics and plenty of surprises (including a guest spot by Lily Allen, now calling herself Lily Rose Cooper).
‘Try’ hit me right off the bat, with the subliminal bass line and haunting piano tease at the opening seguing beautifully into the monster chorus. This is hit-making of the highest order. This song, and The Truth About Love in general, rockets Pink to the front of her class.
I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next, and I suspect I’ll fill some of that time discovering the albums she released before these two.
How it all turned to lies
Sometimes I think that it’s better to never ask why
Where there is desire
There is gonna be a flame
Where there is a flame
Someone’s bound to get burned
But just because it burns
Doesn’t mean you’re gonna die
You’ve gotta get up and try, try, try
Gotta get up and try, try, try
You gotta get up and try, try, try
Funny how the heart can be deceiving
More than just a couple times
Why do we fall in love so easy?
Even when it’s not right
Where there is desire
There is gonna be a flame
Where there is a flame
Someone’s bound to get burned
But just because it burns
Doesn’t mean you’re gonna die
You’ve gotta get up and try, try, try
Gotta get up and try, try, try
You gotta get up and try, try, try
Ever worried that it might be ruined
And does it make you wanna cry?
When you’re out there doing what you’re doing
Are you just getting by?
Tell me are you just getting by, by, by
Where there is desire
There is gonna be a flame
Where there is a flame
Someone’s bound to get burned
But just because it burns
Doesn’t mean you’re gonna die
You’ve gotta get up and try, try, try
Gotta get up and try, try, try
You gotta get up and try, try, try
Gotta get up and try, try, try
Gotta get up and try, try, try
You gotta get up and try, try, try
Gotta get up and try, try, try
You gotta get up and try, try, try
Gotta get up and try, try, try

She is undoubtedly a talented pop songwriter. This song doesn’t immediately reel me in the way something like “Raise Your Glass” did, but maybe because its not quite as edgy.
