It’s my favorite time of year already. Not just the holiday season but the year-end list season. Time to spend one month looking past on the pop culture achievements of the past eleven.
2012 has shaped up to be an excellent year for music and, if the films on my must-see list live up to their promise, for movies as well. Starting next week I will count down my favorite songs of the year.
But this week I’m providing a little grab bag of songs that either slipped under my radar or deserved a mention even though they didn’t make my list.
Korean pop star Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ is an example of the latter. How can I not reserve a day for the man who boasts the most watched video in the history of YouTube, with more than 853 million views as I type this (and no doubt hundreds of thousands more since)?
Why this video? Sure, the song is catchy (though it’s awfully reminiscent of ‘Party Rock Anthem’ to my ears) but most viewed of all time?
I suspect it’s the combination of so many bizarrely memorable moments: the little boy, Psy screaming at a woman’s rear end, the man in yellow, the horses, and of course the cowboy dance itself. You almost have to watch it again immediately just to confirm that it’s all real.

This phenomenon is certainly fascinating. I think it shows just how much people love to see and then do a new dance style. I know I am always looking for a fresh dance move.😄
The song itself is catchy enough. Fueled mostly by the break before the title is sung. And I think for English speakers, there is just enough to cling to so as to make it seem less foreign and more familiar to our ears.
