Song of the Day #1,491: ‘Sleep Tonight’ – Tim McGraw

I suppose it’s fitting that my first Random Weekend selection after a week dedicated to my favorite country artist would be from the only true country album I owned before becoming a fan.

Tim McGraw’s And the Dancehall Doctors is a great country record for people who don’t like country music. It has a nice pop sheen, impressive instrumentation, solid songcraft, even a cover of Elton John’s ‘Tiny Dancer.’

And in McGraw, it has a great actor (check out his work in Peter Berg’s Friday Night Lights and The Kingdom) and one of country music’s few Democrats. What’s not to like?

Hey darkness don’t you try
To steal the moment or close my eyes
I won’t let you in

‘Cause this feels too damn good to me
All I want and all I need
Is her touch again and again and again

(Chorus)
I don’t wanna go to sleep tonight
I don’t want anything to change
I don’t wanna wake up and find a different day
Yeah, she makes me free
Here between the day and the twilight
I don’t wanna go to sleep tonight

Time stop dead in your tracks
Turn around and don’t look back
And just let us be

I’m gonna take this time and soak it up
Forever wouldn’t be long enough
If you knew her you’d agree, agree with me

(Chorus)

I wish the sun would just forget to come up
And just leave us wrapped up in this love

(Chorus)

  1. Dana says:

Like his acting and his politics, but have yet to hear a song from him I would want to hear twice.. Today’s song is a bland paint by numbers pop country song. Nothing special at all. His cover of Tiny Dancer is passable but it just makes me want to hear the far superior original.by Elton or Ben Fold’s cover.
