Song of the Day #1,463: ‘The Further I Slide’ – Badly Drawn Boy

Badly Drawn Boy is another artist — like Jude and Jump, Little Children on recent Random Weekends — who once upon a time seemed like somebody who might be a long-time favorite.

His first album, The Hour of the Bewilderbeest, was a left-field surprise, marrying solid pop hooks to sonic experimentation and a poetic sensibility. His soundtrack for About a Boy captured the film’s tone and featured a couple of memorable singles.

And his follow-up album, Have You Fed the Fish?, picked up where those projects left off, advancing his sound without abandoning it. I can listen to these albums start to finish and love most of what I hear.

But Damon Gough (the man behind the “band”) has released four albums since this one came out in 2002 and I’ve stayed away. I believe I did own 2004’s One Plus One Is One briefly, but it must have made so little an impression on me that I ditched it and never bought another of his albums.

Starting today we’re on holiday
Everybody sees you in the wrong way
No one else sees you my way

Your gazes cripple me
Keep life a mystery
I don’t want it to change
Just keep them coming my way

But that’s all a lie
I can’t rationalize
The further I slide
I can’t seem to get back to your side

‘Cos you’re a summer child
And I’m a winter mild
I can’t stay with the heat
As you blossom out around me

What if there is nothing after this?

Your gazes cripple me
Keep life a mystery
I don’t want it to change
Just keep ’em coming my way

So is this from one of the albums you like? Nice enough sound. They have popped up randomly on my iPod from time to time thanks to your generous donation and I usually have liked what i’ve heard.

This reminds me of so many artists/bands who fall into that “one hit wonder” category by virtue of having only one (or maybe two) albums that I happen to own and love despite the fact that they’ve continued producing music for years. Sara Hickman comes to mind. And Julia Fordham. I like the sound of these artists, but it always comes down to only having so many hours a week to listen to music. If I’m going to pull out an album (or select a playlist) of one of those artists, it’s going to be the album I know and love. I’m rarely in the mood to get to know better the albums I don’t know as well.

That was me, Amy. Not sure what happened there.
