Song of the Day #1,396: ‘Abandoned’ – Lucinda Williams

Best Albums of the 80s – #9
Lucinda Williams – Lucinda Williams (1988)

Lucinda Williams’ 1988 self-titled album feels like a debut but was actually her third album. She released her first record, a collection of covers, in 1979 and her second, the minor Happy Woman Blues, in 1980 before taking a lengthy hiatus.

It was a full eight years before this album came out and launched her career critically if not commercially. At least three songs on Lucinda Williams became hits for other artists but the album itself has sold only 100,000 copies to date.

But no doubt all 100,000 people who bought it became instant fans. This is a record that gets under your skin from the first listen — it has an elemental quality, as if it somehow existed long before it was committed to tape.

The album is modest in every aspect but the extraordinary songwriting. In that way it reminds me a lot of Randy Newman’s early albums (such as 12 Songs and Sail Away). No studio trickery or ornate instrumentation necessary — just an artist, a small band, a microphone and an amazing collection of songs.

Lucinda Williams features ‘Passionate Kisses’ and ‘Side of the Road,’ which alone would qualify it for a best-of list. But every song here is special, from the Cajun shuffle of ‘Crescent City’ to the rock stomp of ‘Changed the Locks’ (later covered by Tom Petty) and the intimate balladry of ‘Like a Rose.’

Ten years later, Williams would release her masterpiece, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, but this record sits on a pedestal just below it.

All of my love has been taken for granted
I’ve been fair but you’ve been underhanded
I’ve been disgraced but I can’t bear to face it
‘Cause the truth is my heart has been abandoned

I was hoping for Heaven but baby I ain’t blind
This ain’t the first time I’ve been undermined
Sad eyes and crooked smile that I remember well
Now it looks like all I got is time to kill

You can’t fool me, I see it in your eyes
You can’t fool me, I see it in your eyes
Everything I thought we had, has all been cast aside
You can’t fool me, I see it in your eyes

These boots are the same boots I was wearing then
And this beer I’m drinkin’ is still the same old brand
But these blues are something new, they came around when I lost you
And it looks like I got stuck with an empty hand

You can’t fool me, I see it in your eyes
You can’t fool me, I see it in your eyes
Everything I thought we had, has all been cast aside
You can’t fool me, I see it in your eyes
You can’t fool me, I see it in your eyes

High praise and high placement on your list. I know the “hits,” either by her or as covered by others, but don’t know the rest of the album. Sounds like I need to check it out.

How can you choose an album that you didn’t even listen to until more than a decade after its release? Doesn’t the music have to made an impact on you during that decade to qualify as “best of” in a particular decade?

  3. Clay says:

    No.
