Today’s SOTD represents the union of two excellent things introduced to me by my niece: Taylor Swift and The Hunger Games.
‘Safe & Sound’ is the first video released from the soundtrack to the upcoming film based on Suzanne Collins’ popular YA series. My wife and I read the books in record time after hearing our niece, Madison, rave about them and we’re eagerly anticipating the film’s release later this month.
Madison also introduced us to Taylor Swift, another worthy find. She was into country music before it was cool (in other words, before I was into country music) and her affection for the extremely talented Swift was contagious.
It must be blissfully overwhelming for Maddie to see Swift and The Hunger Games come together. In addition to this lead-off single, Swift performs another track on the soundtrack, which also features tunes by Arcade Fire, Neko Case and Miranda Lambert (with Pistol Annies).
Looks like The Hunger Games is going from a must-read to a must-see to a must-listen. Impressive!
This song is a bit sleepy but it fits the melancholy mood of the material nicely. The Civil Wars harmonize with Swift on the chorus, lending an ethereal mood that’s also captured in the video.
When I said, I’ll never let you go
When all those shadows almost killed your light
I remember you said, Don’t leave me here alone
But all that’s dead and gone and passed tonight
Just close your eyes
The sun is going down
You’ll be alright
No one can hurt you now
Come morning light
You and I’ll be safe and sound
Don’t you dare look out your window darling
Everything’s on fire
The war outside our door keeps raging on
Hold onto this lullaby
Even when the music’s gone
Just close your eyes
The sun is going down
You’ll be alright
No one can hurt you now
Come morning light
You and I’ll be safe and sound
Just close your eyes
You’ll be alright
Come morning light,
You and I’ll be safe and sound…
Well, I’ll have to make sure Maddie looks at today’s SOTD:)
I too was indoctrinated into both the music of Swift and the Hunger Games series by Maddie. What can I say? My girl has great taste and an eye for talent:)
We are all looking forward to the movie. And how great would it be for Swift to be nominated or, better yet, win an Oscar for this song next year?
It’s hard to imagine the song becoming a hit with such a haunting, sleepy sound, though I have heard it on the radio, so who knows?
Good for Maddie! She does have great taste in all things!
🙂 thank you. I am blissfully overwhelmed by this union, and I am most happy that Taylor really loved the books and put a lot of thought into this song and its lyrics. I’m so glad I could introduce you and my parents to such a wonderful series and person, and i’m even gladder that they have come together and found a way onto your blog. I can’t wait until her other single she made is revealed with the rest of the album. Great choice for SOTD! 🙂
What a lovely post 🙂 I think this song beautifully captures the mood of the book, and I’m glad to be introduced to the Civil Wars (which is such an odd/cool name for a band!)
