I’m picking up where I left off last week, with a look at the top singles on Village Voice’s Pazz & Jop poll, and sitting rather unexpectedly at #7 is Britney Spears’ ‘Till the World Ends.’
Or maybe it’s not so unexpected. For some strange reason, Britney Spears has a rather strong track record with music critics, even more so since she crashed and burned several years ago. Maybe music writers just like a comeback story? Can it possibly be that they like her music?
It’s an accepted fact that Spears can’t sing. She owes her career to computer trickery that masks a depressing lack of talent. So I suppose a song like this one landing in the top ten is more a testament to the song’s writers and producers, as any generic pop starlet could deliver the heavily Auto-Tuned vocals.
Even by that standard, this song is rather ordinary. I can’t see heaping praise on a song in which a major component of the chorus is, and I quote, “Woah oh oh oh oh oh ohhh. [x8]”.
‘Till the World Ends’ would be effective enough on the dance floor, but so would any of a thousand other songs with a strong beat and cool synths. I don’t get it.
If there as any Britney Spears fans out there, please explain her appeal in the comments. I’m genuinely interested.
Spit it out cause I’m dying for company
I notice that you got it
You notice that I want it
You know that I can take it
To the next level, baby
If you want this good bitch
Sicker than the remix
Baby, let me blow your mind
Tonight
[Chorus:]
I can’t take it, take it, take no more
Never felt like, felt like this before
Come on get me, get me on the floor
DJ what you, what you waiting for?
Woah oh oh oh oh oh ohhh. [x8]
Watch me move, when I lose, when I lose it hard
Get you off with the touch dancing in the dark
You notice what I’m wearing,
I notice that you’re staring
You know that I can take it,
To the next level, baby
Harder than the A-list,
Next one on my hit list
Baby, let me blow your mind
Tonight
[Chorus:]
I can’t take it, take it, take no more
Never felt like, felt like this before
Come on get me, get me on the floor
DJ what you, what you waiting for?
Woah oh oh oh oh oh ohhh. [x8]
See the sunlight, we ain’t stopping
Keep on dancing till the world ends
If you feel it let it happen
Keep on dancing till the world ends
Keep on dancing till the world ends
Keep on dancing till the world ends
Woah oh oh oh oh oh ohhh. [x8]
See the sunlight, we ain’t stopping
Keep on dancing till the world ends
If you feel it let it happen
Keep on dancing till the world ends
I’m with you that I don’t really care much for Spears, nor do I really get the recent critical praise. Today’s song does nothing for me, though I admit that I liked one of the singles off the new album, “I Wanna Go,” better than this song. That may be partly because I first became familiar with that song through a clever alternate version Maddie shared where the lyrics had been changed to Hunger Games references.
It is a bit hard to believe though that Spears can’t sing at all, as you would think Disney would not have hired her as a mouseketeer back in the day if she couldn’t sing. Others from that Mouse Club class such as Christina Aguilara and Justin Timberlake clearly can sing.
