Charting at #9 on the Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll is Adele’s second smash single, ‘Someone Like You.’ ‘Rolling in the Deep,’ predictably, sits at the #1 spot with a nearly 20-vote lead.
It’s impressive that Adele dominated the charts, the airwaves and critics’ year-end lists. Usually those things don’t happen at the same time. Honestly, I can’t remember the last time a year’s best-selling album was also its most critically acclaimed.
‘Someone Like You’ is a wonderful song, all the more powerful due to its simplicity. How tempted must Adele and her producers have been to load this thing up with strings to really sell the chorus? But they stick with the simple piano and that gorgeous voice throughout, resisting the urge to reach into the bag of tricks.
I don’t know if Adele will ever match the run she had in 2011 — I don’t know if anybody will — but she earned every minute of it.
That you found a girl and you’re married now
I heard that your dreams came true
Guess she gave you things I didn’t give to you
Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain’t like you to hold back or hide from the light
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it
I had hoped you’d see my face and that you’d be reminded
That for me, it isn’t over
Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don’t forget me, I begged, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
You know how the time flies
Only yesterday was the time of our lives
We were born and raised in a summer haze
Bound by the surprise of our glory days
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it
I had hoped you’d see my face and that you’d be reminded
That for me, it isn’t over yet
Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don’t forget me, I begged, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead, yeah
Nothing compares, no worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes, they’re memories made
Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?
Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you
Don’t forget me, I begged, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don’t forget me, I begged, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Well, Maddie is just THRILLED that you are featuring another Adele song:)
Of course, the rest of us souls on Planet Earth are on board in the appreciation for Adele bandwagon. While this song is not on the level of “Rolling in the Deep” for me, it is nevertheless a standout. Unlike “Deep” though, to which I never grow tired listening, I have heard today’s song one (or maybe 50) too many times on the radio. Of late, it’s been mostly replaced by “Set Fire to the Rain” on the airwaves, which I find to be good, but not as good as the first two singles. It will be interesting to see how many more hits they can squeeze out of this album. I’m just hoping that they don’t release “Rumor Has It,” because the chorus of that one drives me insane.
I, on the other hand, adore this song perhaps even more than Rolling in the Deep. It is just gorgeous. I can never think of a better word to describe it. I hope she wins everything tomorrow night!
