Song of the Day #1,284: ‘Wait & See’ – Holy Ghost!

Everything old is destined to become new again and, Adele’s resurrection of the 60s pop sound notwithstanding, the most prevalent example these days has to be the ubiquity of the 80s New Wave sound on modern dance records.

Remember when this stuff wasn’t cool, about 15 minutes after it was? Well, now it’s as cool as it gets. I remember when Carson Daly introduced some hot upcoming band on a New Year’s Eve special a year ago, calling them “what music will sound like in the future” and my wife, after hearing 30 seconds of their performance, said “Apparently music in the future will sound like 1985.”

Holy Ghost! is a duo — Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser — who played in a rap outfit before making a name for themselves as remixers and starting their own band. They have so embraced the 80s as a template for their music that they have Michael McDonald singing guest vocals on one track of their self-titled debut.

In the video for ‘Wait & See,’ we see the pair jamming in an apartment studio and then having a fun night on the town… only they are portrayed by their real-life fathers. Is it wry commentary of some sort? I don’t know, but it’s cute as hell.

in a train oh I hate how you make me feel
not the same in a blink of an eyelid
the other changed too
now the problems with me all in you

in the cut
in the heart of the darkness
I feel it stop
I feel dark I feel heartless
are you feeling both to?
now the problems with me all in you

chorus

well you promised to be honest with me
were you being honest tell me honestly
cause you got me worried worried worried
I guess I’ll have to wait
I guess I’ll have to wait and see

wait to your clock found without anyone
cause .. in the town where I will meet the glove of
the father who guards her from love ..
wait to it or are you make me .. wake
I guess I feel lately that I have been mistaken
now the problems with me are in you

Wow–it’s as if Wang Chung just released a new album in 1988! As someone with a soft spot for 80’s music–the music of my youth as they say–I can’t help but to be genetically drawn to this. Good stuff. All that is old really is new again.

Okay, I’m loving this… both the 80’s song and those fabulous fathers!!! I want to hear the story behind this video.
