Song of the Day #1,283: ‘Crossed Wires’ – Superchunk

Next up in my series on memorable music videos from 2011 is a clip from Superchunk for their song ‘Crossed Wires.’

Unlike some of these artists, I have heard of Superchunk, though I can’t say I’ve ever heard anything by them. They came out of the same ’90s Chapel Hill music scene that produced Ben Folds Five and are notable for eschewing offers from major labels in order to record for their own company, on their own terms.

Prior to late 2010, the band’s last full-length release dated back to a week after the September 11 attacks in 2001. Their return, nearly a decade later, was titled Majesty Shredding and featured today’s song as a single.

This is a cute video, answering the age-old question ‘What does my cat do when I’m not around?’

I went out, felt the sun on my face
Then a tug on my leg and now I’m back in the cave
There’s a moment of peace that I just can’t recreate
I need sleep, but my brain won’t get tired
I smell like smoke from electrical fires

Don’t touch me ’cause I’ve got crossed wires…crossed wires
Keep your hands free, I’ve got crossed wires…crossed wires
Crossed wires, Crossed wires
Crossed wires, Crossed wires
Crossed wires

A day like this, we should be out on the road
With the sky so clear and the air so cold
There’s blankets in the back, bundle up my little urchin
‘Cause we never got the heat working
No, we never got the heat working

Collecting the notes you slipped under the door
I go blank when I try to remember what we were good for
I’m cracked, I’m crossed and it’s no way to be
Let’s just get lost and maybe it will come back to me…back to me

  1. Dana says:

Boy, that it was naughty party cat!

This isn’t my favorite kind of sound, but I can see there is some talent in this band.
