Today’s entry doesn’t qualify as a proper album review like the rest of my songs this week and last because I haven’t actually heard the whole album, just three tracks.
My daughters are big fans of the Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place, which stars Selena Gomez as a smart-aleck teenage witch. Gomez is a charming actress and not a bad singer, giving her a leg up on many of the wannabe multi-platform stars on the tween shows that have overtaken my TV.
Gomez is also dating Justin Bieber, making her the envy (and target) of an army of little girls. And boy, could she do better.
Gomez is on the cusp of that “no longer a girl, not quite a woman” phase. In about three years it won’t be creepy to find her attractive. I’m reminded of Mila Kunis on That 70’s Show, morphing from a goofy 15-year-old into the goddess of Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Gomez might get there someday.
For now, she’s navigating her way from teen TV star to adult recording artist. And her latest effort, When the Sun Goes Down, suggests she might make the transition. But again, I’m basing this on three songs.
When I first heard opening single ‘Love You Like a Love Song’ I found it rather absurd. A love song about loving you like a long song, in which the main words are “I love you like a love song” — um, OK. But I must admit that this song has grown on me considerably and I actually find myself bopping along when my daughter’s play it.
Every beautiful thought’s been already sung
And I guess right now here’s another one
So your melody will play on and on, with best of ’em
You are beautiful, like a dream come alive, incredible
A centerfold miracle, lyrical
You’ve saved my life again
And I want you to know baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
And I keep hittin’ re-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat
Constantly, boy you played through my mind like a symphony
There’s no way to describe what you do to me
You just do to me, what you do
And it feels like I’ve been rescued
I’ve been set free
I am hypnotized by your destiny
You are magical, lyrical, beautiful
You are…I want you to know baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
And I keep hittin’ re-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat
No one compares
You stand alone, to every record I own
Music to my hear that’s what you are
A song that goes on and on
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
And I keep hittin’ re-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat
I find Selena Gomez is unique and dramatic in this video and every video.
I find that her songs our like other songs on the radio, but aren’t everyone’s, and I can see why Sophie would like her. now about this song it’s very catchy it’s an interesting video but to me the lyrics aren’t the best, all in all this song’s just okay to me.
It continues to amaze me how that Disney machine can develop talents like Gomez and hit songs that become favorites of the young and the young at heart. I’ve only seen a few scenes here and there of Wizards, but I can see the appeal of the show and of Gomez. And, of course, I’ve heard Gomez’ songs, including this one, on Radio Disney.
While a song like today’s may not be particularly great, it certainly does stick in one’s head, which is what any effective pop song should do. So now, thanks to you, as I go about my lawyerly business today, I will have the chorus to this song swimming somewhere in my head:)
I agree with Ralph on his excellent critique of this song and video.
Repeat..peat.. peat… peat 😉
