Song of the Day #1,040: ‘Samsonite Man’ – Alicia Keys

I’ve featured only one other Alicia Keys song on the blog so far and that was during a week in which I posted songs with no commentary. Sitting here wondering what to write about this one, I can see why that’s the case.

I simply don’t have much to say about the 30-year-old R&B sensation who was raised in Hell’s Kitchen and went on to study classical piano before recording her multiple Grammy-winning first album.

You could make a movie about that backstory, but I can barely tap out a blog post. Why is that?

Keys is a talented writer, pianist and singer, but she doesn’t make the kind of music I’m particularly drawn to. She’s a beautiful woman, and totally my type, but I don’t really find her attractive. In fact, watching her makes me wonder if perhaps it’s impossible for a woman to look sexy playing the piano.

Despite my ambivalence, I own Keys’ first two albums. They’re both fine for what they are, but fall into my R&B blind spot. Try as I might, I can’t get into this sort of thing.

I do like ‘Samsonite Man,’ though, from Keys’ sophomore release, The Diary of Alicia Keys. It has an appealing Stevie Wonder vibe that works for me. Perhaps that’s because I’m the very opposite of a Samsonite man.

He’s a man so full of style and grace
Any woman’d be impressed
Takes a smile and paints it on your face
Makes you feel like you’ve been blessed
Promises things so special
It seems to come right from a song
But soon as you begin to feel secure
You turn around and he is gone

Packin’ his bags
Gotta go gotta go
Packin his bags
Gotta go
He’s a Samsonite man

Maybe he is just a rolling stone
Wondering from here to there
Searching for a place to call his own
You wonder if he even cares
So many years of heartache and pain
Is all you seem to know him for
Is it you or is it him to blame?
Whenever he walks out your door

If the wind blows you in my direction
You come through to rendezvous
Forget about your good intentions
They leave me lonely and confused
Mr. Samsonite
Pack a bag, that is my suggestion
From here on out, you will be leaving
At my discretion

I also have not gotten into Alicia Keys, though I agree she is talented. This song is okay, but nothing that overwhelms me.

And, now that you mention it, you may be right that nobody looks sexy playing a piano:)

While I’m certainly no huge fan of Alicia Keys, I do find one of her songs particularly compelling:

As much as I like Jay-Z’s contribution to the original version of this song, I actually love the version I’m sharing here even more.

As for the notion that a woman, or any person, can’t look sexy while playing piano… I’m speechless. That’s just crazy. It may be that you are more attracted to the musicians who play guitar, or just sing and dance (Beyonce, anyone?), but anyone talented enough to move her/his hands over strings or keys to create music is sexy, almost by default.

    Case in point…

Now I don’t find Ben Folds particularly sexy, but I sure as hell find his piano playing in this clip sexy.
