Song of the Day #943: ‘Sparks Fly’ – Taylor Swift

I had a dream about Taylor Swift last night.

Not last night, February 8, but last night as I’m writing this. I write these in advance, sometimes well in advance… hope that doesn’t shatter anybody’s illusions. I’m writing this on January 29, so last night was January 28.

And last night I had a dream about Taylor Swift.

It wasn’t that kind of dream, and the truth is I’ve never thought of Swift in that kind of way. She’s attractive, I suppose, but also kind of awkward and lanky. Unlike most teenagers in the music industry who look and act like they’re 25, she’s a 21-year-old who looks and acts like a teenager.

It’s been a long time since I woke up and the dream has mostly faded in the way dreams always do. I hate that. But the gist of it was that Taylor Swift was playing a private concert in a modest ballroom, perhaps for a corporate retreat or something like that. And I walked in midway and caught the tail end of one of her songs.

Afterward, she left the stage and somehow we got to talking. I mentioned that my niece is a big fan and she agreed to write a note to her. I marveled out loud that she was the first celebrity I’d met who looked in person exactly like she looks onscreen (as if I’ve seen more than a couple of celebrities in my life in person).

And then we went driving in a convertible — I’m not sure if it was hers or mine. Other people were looking for us, probably her manager or someone like that. We were on the lam and sharing an adrenaline rush that fed a mutual attraction. If this was a movie — and what are dreams if not our personal movies — this was the scene where we started falling in love.

I woke up before it got any better than that, but I’ve been thinking about Taylor Swift a little differently all day. I don’t suddenly find her attractive. She’s still not my type. But we shared a moment, she and I, whether she knows it or not.

And I’m thinking maybe, through some subconscious connection with the dream world, she wrote this song about us.

The way you move is like a full on rainstorm
And I’m a house of cards
You’re the kinda reckless that should send me running
But I kinda know I won’t get far

And you stood there in front of me just
Close enough to touch
Close enough to hope you couldn’t see
What I was thinking of

Drop everything now
Meet me in the pouring rain
Kiss me on the sidewalk
Take away the pain

‘Cause I see, sparks fly whenever you smile
Get me with those green eyes, baby
As the lights go down
Gimme something that’ll haunt me when you’re not around

‘Cause I see, sparks fly whenever you smile

My mind forgets to remind me
You’re a bad idea
You touch me once and it’s really something
You find I’m even better than you
Imagined I would be

I’m on my guard for the rest of the world
But with you I know it’s no good
And I could wait patiently but I really wish you would

Drop everything now
Meet me in the pouring rain
Kiss me on the sidewalk
Take away the pain

‘Cause I see, sparks fly whenever you smile
Get me with those green eyes, baby
As the lights go down
Gimme something that’ll haunt me when you’re not around
‘Cause I see, sparks fly whenever you smile

I run my fingers through your hair
And watch the lights wild
Just keep on keeping your eyes on me

It’s just wrong enough to make you feel right
And lead me up the staircase,
Won’t you whisper soft and slow?
I’m captivated by you baby
Like a firework show

Drop everything now
Meet me in the pouring rain
Kiss me on the sidewalk
Take away the pain

‘Cause I see, sparks fly whenever you smile
Get me with those green eyes, baby
As the lights go down
Gimme something that’ll haunt me when you’re not around
‘Cause I see, sparks fly whenever you smile

And the sparks fly,
Oh, baby smile,
And the sparks fly

    Quite the confessional:)

As for the song, I know that this is a favorite of your kids, and maybe you as well, but, having heard the album a number of times, I find this one to be the toss away tune. It is the least interesting musically and lyrically. Clearly, though, it (and maybe now she) makes your sparks fly:)

Nice dream and I like the idea of dreams being our “personal movies”, good song too.

  3. Maddie says:

thank you for mentioning me to her in you dream 🙂 Much appreciated

I have to agree with Dana that this is my least favorite song on the album (and, probably, all of her albums). That’s not to say it isn’t perfectly palatable; it just doesn’t have nearly the “spark” as most of her others songs do.

As for your dream…. I’m not sure what to think about that, except I imagine it was a pleasant dream the way those sorts of dreams can be. And I bet that Taylor would exactly just as she did in your dream (with the exception of running off with you) if you were to meet her in person. In other words, I have no doubt she’d write a note for Maddie 🙂

I’m surprised to hear this song isn’t well thought of in your household (though Maddie didn’t chime in on her opinion of it). I like it better than several songs on Speak Now and I think it has a drive and pop-rock sensibility that’s new and welcome for her.

My least favorite song on the album, incidentally, is ‘Last Kiss’ by a mile. Six minutes of plodding sentimentality… I can’t even get through it. It’s wildly out of place on an album of so many gems.

  7. Amy says:

Yes, yes, yes, you’re right. That is a much worse song!

  8. Maddie says:

Sorry i didn’t chime in on that XD
I like the song, it’s pretty nice and catchy… but then again I like Last Kiss too, even though it’s about Joe Jonas. i guess even the less amazingly written Taylor songs are ranked far higher in my mind that many of the repeated radio station songs
