Song of the Day #888: ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ – U2

You can’t really have a theme week on religion in pop music and leave out Bono. U2 is certainly the most successful band to ever write so openly about god and faith and some of their best songs are deeply religious.

A favorite of mine is this little-known track from the under-rated 1997 album, Pop. Pop remains the band’s worst-selling album and even the band members themselves have dismissed it as a failed experiment that they released essentially unfinished.

But while it isn’t perfect, the album does go places sonically that the band hadn’t gone before and it contains some deeply heartfelt and provocative material.

One of the best is the closing track ‘Wake Up Dead Man,’ a plea to Jesus to step in and bring order to the chaos of modern life. The opening lines are quite powerful, and the sort of thing I think we all can identify with at one time or another: “Jesus, help me, I’m alone in this world, and a fucked-up world it is, too.”

I suspect this crisis in faith was brought upon Bono by the unexpected death of a loved one. The final verse asks Jesus “Did you think to try and warn her?” and wonders if we can “rewind it just once more.”

Jesus, Jesus help me
I’m alone in this world
And a fucked-up world it is too
Tell me, tell me the story
The one about eternity
And the way it’s all gonna be

Wake up, wake up dead man
Wake up, wake up dead man

Jesus, I’m waiting here boss
I know you’re looking out for us
But maybe your hands aren’t free
Your father, He made the world in seven
He’s in charge of heaven
Will you put in a word in for me

Wake up, wake up dead man
Wake up, wake up dead man

Listen to your words they’ll tell you what to do
Listen over the rhythm that’s confusing you
Listen to the reed in the saxophone
Listen over the hum of the radio
Listen over sounds of blades in rotation
Listen through the traffic and circulation
Listen as hope and peace try to rhyme
Listen over marching bands playing out their time

Wake up, wake up dead man
Wake up, wake up dead man

Jesus, were you just around the corner
Did You think to try and warn her
Or are you working on something new
If there’s an order in all of this disorder
Is it like a tape recorder
Can we rewind it just once more

Wake up, wake up dead man
Wake up, wake up dead man
Wake up, wake up dead man

well, here’s another U2 song I could live a long life without hearing again:) In addition to finding the music less than inspiring, the production is pretty awful.

This is a different U2 than I’ve ever heard before – interesting. Can’t say that I like it, but it is powerful.
