Song of the Day #841: ‘My Moon My Man’ – Feist

I’m trying a different sort of theme this week: music I don’t like.

OK, that’s not entirely accurate. Some of the songs I feature this week I’ll like quite a bit. But the trait all of the featured artists share is the disconnect between their critical reception and my (lack of) appreciation of them.

These, in other words, are artists I’m supposed to like but don’t.

After nearly a decade of obscurity, Canadian singer-songwriter Feist hit it big in 2007 with her album The Reminder and the ubiquitous song ‘1234.’ That tune was used in an Apple Nano commercial and became an instant hit.

Critics latched on to The Reminder as the assured work of a confident, avant-garde talent, drawing comparisons to artists from Bjork to Joni Mitchell. In the words of a Pitchfork reviewer, she has “a voice that could make even Dick Cheney weep.”

I picked up the album after reading a batch of these reviews and, as so often happens, barely made it through it once due to sheer boredom. I liked ‘1234’ well enough but the rest just left me flat. I haven’t listened to it since.

So here I am, selecting a Feist song at random to feature on the blog today, and I’ll be damned if it isn’t a great one. Did I miss the bus the first time around? Or did I just get lucky and pick one of the only songs on the album I like? I suppose I owe The Reminder another listen.

My moon, my man
So changeable and
Such a loveable lamb to me

My care, my coat
leave on a high note
There’s nowhere to go but on

Heart on my sleeve
Not where it should be
The song’s out of key again

My moon’s white face
What day and what phase
It’s the calender page again

Take it slow
Take it easy on me
Shed some light
Shed some light on me please
Take it slow
Take it easy on me
Shed some light
Shed some light on me please

My moon and me
Not as good as we’ve been
It’s the dirtiest clean I know

My care my coat
Leave on a hight note
There’s nowhere to go
There’s nowhere to go

Take it slow
Take it easy on me
Shed some light
Shed some light on things
Take it slow
Take it easy on me
Shed some light
Shed some light on it please

My moon
The moon’s my man…

decent sounding song. And I’ve done very similar dance routines on MIA’s moving walkways.

would love to have seen that Dana, along with Dick Cheney weeping 🙂 Catchy song and a nice voice too.
