Shakira’s next, and most recent, album was 2009’s English-language She Wolf. She threw her international listeners a bone by putting out a Spanish version of the lead single (titled ‘Loba’) a month before the album’s release.
She Wolf was a departure for Shakira in that it was more tightly focused than anything she’d released before. In part that’s because the album clocks in at around 30 minutes (not counting some bonus live tracks and alternate versions) and therefore doesn’t leave much room for rampant experimentation.
But mostly Shakira was going for a dance club vibe on these tracks, utilizing every studio trick at her disposal to deliver a slick modern sound heavy on beats and bass.
While the album prompted some accusations of selling out, I believe she succeeded spectacularly. She Wolf is her best sounding album and features some of her best-crafted songs to date. This is the first English-language album she’s released that I would stack alongside her Spanish-language records.
‘Men In This Town,’ with its insanely catchy chorus and staccato freak-out bridge, is one of the more oddly brilliant tracks on the CD. I love how she laments the unavailability of Matt Damon (a friend of hers, apparently) in decrying the scarcity of good men. The song is not autobiographical, as Shakira has been with Antonio de la Rúa (the son of a former Argentine president) for 10 years.
This month will see the release of Sale El Sol, Shakira’s seventh album. It’s a Spanish-language record that reportedly returns to the Latin and rock roots of her earlier career. I, for one, can’t wait. At 33, with six albums and 50 million record sales under her belt, Shakira seems to be just getting started.
For a small town girl like me?
The good ones are gone or not able
and Matt Damon’s not meant for me
Damon’s not meant for me
I got to say
California is a place that I respect
Come on LA, take advantage
Give me a night that I won’t forget
I went to look
From the Sky Bar to the Standard, nothing took
These boys don’t care
Got a handful with their projects and with their looks
Where are all the men in this town?
And what’s a girl supposed to do?
Did they all run off when they knew
That I was coming round, coming round?
Fresh
I’m so fresh, I’m so clean
Got the lips and got the skin
Got the skin, got that thing
I’m so fresh and I’m so…
Is there a prince in this fable
For a small town girl like me?
The good ones are gone or not able
and Matt Damon’s not meant for me
I never dreamed that I’d come here
To become the next Jolie
But I sure know there’s someone
Around somewhere who’s meant to be
Where are all the men in this town?
And what’s a girl supposed to do?
Did they all run off when they knew
That I was coming round, coming round?
Fresh
I’m so fresh, I’m so clean
Got the lips and got the skin
Got the skin, got that thing
I’m so fresh and I’m so…
So they say
It’s a suicide, waiting, others say
It’s a suicide, waiting, yo no se
It’s a suicide, waiting, another day
It’s a suicide, waiting
So decide, it’s a suicide waiting, all this time
It’s a suicide, waiting, donde estás?
It’s a suicide, waiting, so decide
It’s a suicide, waiting
Great beat to dance to; just had a memory of “Flashdance” while listening to the song, the scene where she’s in her apt. dancing–this song would work in that scene don’t you think?
I like her Latin sound far better–this does nothing for me. It could be Katy Perry or Lady Gaga or Miley Cyrus. Nothing special.
I don’t listen to much music of this ilk, but if I did, this would be one I’d play. Yes, Peg, Jennifer Beals could definitely dance to this song 🙂
And you have to appreciate a songwriter who can casually drop Matt Damon’s name into her song and make it work. Very clever.
