By the release of ‘Til Tuesday’s third and final album, 1988’s Everything’s Different Now, it had become clear that Aimee Mann was destined for bigger things. Infighting began over the direction of the group’s sound and Mann’s evolution into the primary songwriter.
Everything’s Different Now is the only ‘Til Tuesday album I own, and it’s a good one. It suffers a bit from dated production — there’s no mistaking it for a late 80s release — but the songwriting is top notch. Mann was really coming into her own as a writer and performer. A collaboration with Elvis Costello, ‘The Other End of the Telescope,’ would eventually wind up as the lead song on his All This Useless Beauty album.
Commercially, though, it didn’t fare as well as the band’s earlier albums. And when ‘Til Tuesday broke up after its release, Mann was prevented by the label from releasing solo material. As you’ll see, that was just the beginning of her record industry woes.
‘(Believed You Were) Lucky’ is one of my favorites from the album, though I really like every song on it. My favorite Aimee Mann material doesn’t come from this era but the woman seems to have never written a bad song.
Yeah I guess I will
What’s the use in pushing when it’s all uphill?
I can’t be appointed keeper of the flame
Without two to carry it won’t burn the same
It seems obvious to me but then again
Could be you just never felt that way
I wish you believed in life
Believed in fate
Believed you were lucky and worth the wait
‘Cause life could be lovely
Life could be so great
It gets so embarrassing so I acquiesce
And I’ll change my mind again
You change your address
It seems logical to me
But then again
Could be I was simply not that smart
I thought you believed in life
Believed in fate
Believed you were lucky and worth the wait
‘Cause life could be lovely
Life could be so great
There must be some other door that they are saving
Behind which my happiness lies
I won’t be wasting my words
To tell you hopes that I had
We can just leave it alone for now
I wish you:
Belief in life
Belief in fate
Belief you are lucky and worth the wait
’cause life could be lovely
Life could be fucking great
It’s a bit hard to get past the production of this song to really appreciate the songwriting. Not a great one to me.
