By no means am I a big reggae fan, but I do like the occasional Bob Marley tune. My view of reggae follows the old line about certain tourist destinations… “It’s nice to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.” I can’t imagine listening to a whole reggae album, let alone owning more than one.
But, like every white college boy, I owned the Bob Marley Legend compilation and I have to admit every song on it is a gem. I feel kind of bad that I sold it back in the legendary greatest-hits purge of the early 2000s. Perhaps I shouldn’t be such an absolutist.
I chose this song because it reminds me of a video I made for my Italian class in college. We put together a fake newscast and a bunch of skits and, because a) I had aspirations to go into film, and b) my Italian was atrocious, I volunteered to shoot and edit the production.
It came out pretty well and I used this song over a blooper reel that followed the end credits. I wonder if I still have that old VHS tape lying around somewhere. It would be a kick to watch it again now.
I’ll take reggae over country any day:)
I too was a white guy owning the obligatory Legend album–but what a great album it is! Now, I admit that I have not sought out much (if any) additional reggae over the years, but whenever we do visit the islands, I do find myself enjoying the tunes in the local taxi cab and around the pool. except of course for the dreaded Red, Red Wine. Oh, boy, do I hate that song!
An interesting choice for a blooper reel… hmmmm 🙂
I love reggae music because I associate it with utter relaxation. I listen to this song and I’m either on the deck of a cruise ship heading off to sea or sitting pool (or ocean) side, sipping a daquiri and reading a good book. To listen to it in any other context just seems wrong. As I listen now, I have this incredible itch to open up another tab, head to trip advisor and book a weekend in the Bahamas. Thanks for the mini vacation.
