I like a lot of female artists, but one sub-group I’ve never been a huge fan of is the Lilith Fair crowd. I know this isn’t an entirely fair characterization of Lilith Fair, because acts of all sorts have played there, but you know what I mean… those crunchy-granola types like Paula Cole, Jewel, Shawn Colvin, etc.
Now Sarah McLachlan is probably the godmother of Lilith Fair but she’s on my good side because she released one of the finest albums in my collection, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, back in 1993.
I find this album pretty much perfect from start to finish. The best-known tracks are today’s choice, ‘Possession,’ and ‘Good Enough’ but there isn’t a weak song in the bunch. From the passionate drama of ‘Fear’ to the sweet simplicity of ‘Ice Cream,’ Fumbling has a satisfying arc and an emotional impact that makes it one of the greats.
‘Possession’ is a sexy-as-hell song about obsessive love — in this case, the obsessive (and dangerous) love of a fan for an artist. I’m sure it’s one of those songs, like R.E.M.’s ‘The One I Love,’ that lovers hold hands and sway along to, unaware that it’s really quite dark.
Read the chorus while considering that these are the thoughts of a stalker… it’s probably the most chilling singalong I can imagine.
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I’ll take your breath away
And after I
Wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes dear
I think she stole that from a fan letter I sent to Paul Michael Glaser a few years back.
Great song by a talented artist.
