Song of the Day #3,181: ‘Green Light’ – Lorde

It’s that time of year when the promise of new music bursts forth like flower blossoms in spring. This week I’ll feature songs from five upcoming albums I’ll definitely buy.

It’s been four years since a 16-year-old Lorde became the youngest artist ever to score a #1 Billboard hit. Her album Pure Heroine was a smart and resonant collection, all the more impressive when you took her age into account.

The New Zealander smartly waited before rushing back into the studio, taking some time to live her life rather than capitalize on her unexpected stardom.

Now, at age 20, Lorde is soon to release her sophomore album, Melodrama. If first single ‘Green Light’ is any indication, it will be worth the wait.

This track (about Lorde’s “first great heartbreak,” she says) starts off a lot like the patient ballads of Pure Heroin. But 50 seconds in, as the chorus approaches, a jaunty piano and drums kick in and the song turns into a rousing celebration unlike anything on her debut. It’s a great sound for her and a sign that she’s no one trick pony.

Melodrama hits shelves (and hard drives) in June.

[Verse 1]
I do my makeup in somebody else’s car
We order different drinks at the same bars
I know about what you did and I wanna scream the truth
She thinks you love the beach, you’re such a damn liar

[Refrain]
Those great whites, they have big teeth
Hope they bite you
Thought you said that you would always be in love
But you’re not in love no more
Did it frighten you
How we kissed when we danced on the light up floor?
On the light up floor

[Pre-Chorus]
But I hear sounds in my mind
Brand new sounds in my mind
But honey I’ll be seein’ you ‘ever I go
But honey I’ll be seein’ you down every road
I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it

[Chorus]
‘Cause honey I’ll come get my things, but I can’t let go
I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it
Oh, I wish I could get my things and just let go
I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it

[Verse 2]
Sometimes I wake up in a different bedroom
I whisper things, the city sings ’em back to you

[Refrain]
All those rumors, they have big teeth
Hope they bite you
Thought you said that you would always be in love
But you’re not in love no more
Did it frighten you
How we kissed when we danced on the light up floor?
On the light up floor

[Pre-Chorus]
But I hear sounds in my mind
Brand new sounds in my mind
But honey I’ll be seein’ you ‘ever I go
But honey I’ll be seein’ you down every road
I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it

[Chorus]
‘Cause honey I’ll come get my things, but I can’t let go
I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it
Oh, honey I’ll come get my things, but I can’t let go
I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it
Yes, honey I’ll come get my things, but I can’t let go
I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it
Oh, I wish I could get my things and just let go
I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it

[Outro]
I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it
