Song of the Day #746: ‘Dancing On My Own’ – Robyn

Swedish oddball Robyn writes and records the sort of music I instinctively reject — dance, techno, club stuff — but for some reason I like what I hear from her.

Her self-titled 2005 album (actually her fourth record, released 11 years after her debut) is a marvelous collection with echoes of Prince and Cyndi Lauper. On it she shows a penchant for techno-funk jams and gentle ballads alike and has the sense of humor to have her DJ introduce her as being “listed in section 202 of the United Nations Security Act of 1979 as being too hot to wear tight sweaters in international airspace.”

I like today’s song, her latest hit, well enough. The underlying beat is so tight it rattles your teeth and the whole thing has an 80s vibe I like. It’s nicely constructed, with that industrial cacophony slowing to a halt for the bridge before kicking in again for the final chorus. I dig touches like that.

I don’t know that I’ll be rushing out to buy her latest album on the strength of this song, however. It fits nicely into the theme of the past two weeks… it’s a summer fling, not a lasting relationship.

Somebody said you got a new friend
Does she love you better than I can?
Big black sky over my town
I know where you at, I bet she’s around
Yeah, I know it’s stupid
I just gotta see it for myself

(refrain)
I’m in the corner, watching you kiss her,
oh…
I’m right over here, why can’t you see me,
oh…
I’m giving it my all but I’m not the girl you’re taking home
o-o-oh…
I keep dancing on my own

I’m just gonna dance all night,
I’m all messed up, I’m so outta line
Stilettos and broken bottles,
I’m spinnin around in circles

(refrain)
I’m in the corner, watching you kiss her,
oh…
I’m right over here, why can’t you see me,
oh…
I’m giving it my all but I’m not the girl you’re taking home
o-o-oh…
I keep dancing on my own

So far away but still so near (the lights go on, the music dies)
But you don’t see me standing here ( I just came to say goodbye)

I’m in the corner, watching you kiss her,
oh…
I’m giving it my all but I’m not the girl you’re taking home
o-o-oh…
I keep dancing on my own

(refrain)
I’m in the corner, watching you kiss her,
oh…
I’m right over here, why can’t you see me,
oh…
I’m giving it my all but I’m not the girl you’re taking home
o-o-oh…
I keep dancing on my own

(I keep dancing on my own…)

Is this off the album you bought and reviewed in 2008, or does she have yet another album out? The name sounded familiar, so I checked what else you’d written about her and found a song called “Be Mine” that you confessed to loving while you drove or did lawn work 🙂 This song would fall into that category as well, I’m guessing. This is a track for the dance clubs, or, if you’re not the dance club type, the gym.

I like her voice and the “top” track (or whatever you call it), but that incessant teeth rattling “beat” (is that the bass?) is just a bit too intense for my taste. Still, I can see where it would be a great track to drive people to the dance floor.

Same woman, new album. I don’t like this song as much as her first album, but it is a good club song.

I like the idea of a good beat while working out in the gym. Today I heard BB King sing “When love comes to town” (I think that was the title), have you featured any BB Kings songs in the past? Just wondering. This SOTD could work in the gym as Amy suggested.
