I came across this song/band on SNL and i immediately loved it. Although the subject matter was pretty disturbing, I immediately gravitated to the irresistible catchiness of the song. For someone at 57 to start wanting to dance about like a teen, you know there has to be some magic to it!

As I indicated when I revealed my top 10 songs of the year, this song is right up there near the top. In fact, I flirted with the idea of making it my number one song, but ultimately yielded to the wonderful "Rolling in the Deep." Still, I find "Kicks" to be one of the most refreshing and vibrant songs I have heard in years.

Unlike you, I have heard the song dozens of times, but it never gets stale. I've heard one or two other singles from Foster the People that they have released since and they are good, but nothing like this one. For some artists, lightning in a bottle only strikes once, and I suspect that Foster the People may end up being one of those one hit wonders years from now--the Aha of the 2010s - but, much like "Take on Me," what a one hit it is.

well, this is different. I think my reaction is similar to yours. I kinda like it, but I'm not sure it's something I want to hear more than once.

Looking forward to hearing what the rest of the list has to offer.

Can't say I've ever heard this song before today, which is odd, as I'm so familiar with some of the others (isn't Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters also on this album?) Interesting how even before the iTune revolution, one could still find a way to seek out favorite songs without even being exposed to others on the same album. Mix tapes? Greatest hits albums? Something else I'm not remembering? Anyway, a lovely little song, but if my random/shuffle button returned it, I'd likely skip through until I got to "Tiny Dancer." :)

I don't begin to know enough about the genre to suggest whether Eminem is an exception or not. And I'm not such a fan of this type of music that I would ever find myself wanting to listen to an entire album in one sitting. That said, I find this song to be absolutely brilliant. I appreciate Eminem's music the way I appreciate poetry. When I want to not simply listen but to analyze and to appreciate, that's when I turn on a song by Eminem. Of course, the fact that it largely came on my radar in the midst of all the controversy, with Elton John singing the Dido part on the Grammys in order to demonstrate his solidarity with a fellow artist, who John didn't believe was the homophobe he was accused of being. Suddenly there was a powerful pop culture example I could use in my classroom to illustrate the distinction between author and speaker. So... yeah... Eminem is special.

I seem to recall Jelen being compared to Billy Joel. I listened to the album with some interest because of that, but found, like you, that it was mostly lacking.

This song is wholly generic and uninteresting. The single "Come On" is better.

Ah, Stan....This song is simply brilliant.

I, like you, don't gravitate to rap music, but Eminem is the exception. Your Paisley analogy is an interesting one. However, it seems to me that one of the reasons you like Paisley (and also someone like Lyle Lovett) is that he not only elevates the quality of country music, but he also ventures into other genres like jazz and blues.

Eminem, on the other hand, doesn't really stray from rap--but he just does it better than anyone else I have ever heard do it. Part of it, of course, has to do with the provocative lyrics, but, at least for me, I just love the way he raps. I've heard others rap and have appreciated the quality of the songs, but simply didn't gravitate to the rapper's voice. This is, of course, not a preference unique to Eminem or rap -- it is largely why I don't listen to Rufus Wainwright or you don't listen to Joni Mitchell.

Anyway---again, great song. Makes me want to play the whole album ASAP:)
