Song of the Day #1,884: ‘Angel’ – Sarah McLachlan

sarah_mclachlan_surfacingSarah McLachlan kicked off Random Weekends 19 months (and 597 songs) ago, but she hasn’t shown up since until today. Fountains of Wayne don’t know how good they’ve got it.

This is actually then tenth Sarah McLachlan song to make the blog, though, which is more than I would have guessed for an artist who left my good graces two albums, and ten years, ago.

But when she was good, McLachlan was very good, and today’s song is a lovely example. Few people can pull off a simple piano ballad the way she could.

This song seems to be about either drugs or suicide (or both). The reference to “veins” certainly supports either reading. Is the beautiful release in the arms of the angel a metaphor for getting high or dying? Or something else?

Spend all your time waiting
For that second chance,
For a break that would make it okay.

There’s always some reason
To feel not good enough,
And it’s hard, at the end of the day.

I need some distraction,
Oh, beautiful release.
Memories seep from my veins.

And maybe empty,
Oh, and weightless, and maybe
I’ll find some peace tonight.

In the arms of the angel,
Fly away from here,
From this dark, cold hotel room,
And the endlessness that you fear.
You are pulled from the wreckage,
Of your silent reverie.
You’re in the arms of the angel,
May you find some comfort here.

So tired of the straight line,
And everywhere you turn,
There’s vultures and thieves at your back.

The storm keeps on twisting.
Keep on building the lies
That you make up for all that you lack.

It don’t make no difference,
Escape one last time.
It’s easier to believe in this sweet madness,
Oh, this glorious sadness,
That brings me to my knees.

In the arms of the angel,
Fly away from here,
From this dark, cold hotel room,
And the endlessness that you fear.
You are pulled from the wreckage,
Of your silent reverie.
You’re in the arms of the angel,
May you find some comfort here.

You’re in the arms of your angel,
May you find some comfort here.

19 months of random weekends? Wow!

This is certainly a beautiful, haunting song. I’m not sure it is about death as much as about escape from the plight of life, which could be about drugs, but also perhaps about prostitution?

I agree, it’s a beautiful and haunting song; I think it’s about death what with the “arms of the angel”

  3. Andrea Katz says:

I feel it is about someone who died, lesbianism and drug addiction. Who knows? I LOVE her voice and this song!
