I was reminded of that this week when a YouTube browsing session led me to the account of Mr. Kurt Hugo Schneider. Schneider is a 24-year-old Yale grad who directs music videos of mostly cover songs and medleys that he arranges for an array of talented singers.
Schneider plays multiple instruments, sometimes in the same clip, and is apparently a chess master to boot. I’d hate him, but he also seems like a really nice guy.
I discovered Schneider while scanning YouTube’s most-subscribed artists. Rihanna tops the list with 9 million subscribers and she is followed by a predictable string of Biebers, Swifts, Avrils and GaGas.
But sitting in the top 20 with more than 2 million subscribers was Kurt Hugo Schneider. Who the hell could that be? I had to find out, and more than an hour later I’d watched over a dozen of his insanely well-done music videos.
From both a musical and technical standpoint, his work is extremely impressive. He is a big fan of single take Steadicam videos that appear effortless but obviously require a whole lot of hard work. He’ll have a future as a video and commercial director, no doubt, even if his musical aspirations fall through.
I’m so impressed by Schneider’s videos that I’m going to feature five of them this week, starting with a medley of Maroon 5 songs performed by Victoria Justice (of the Nick show Victorious and Max Schneider (no relation to Kurt).
This clip is not only shot in a single take, but it features the full lyrics of the medley written out in various spots around the set.
