Song of the Day #1,828: ‘Gold in Them Hills’ – Ron Sexsmith

cobblestone_runwayAfter dominating this blog in 2011 during the controversial Ron Sexsmith Weekends, Canadian songwriter Ron Sexsmith made only three appearances in 2012. And here we are, more than halfway through 2013 when he makes his first appearance this year.

Today’s track is probably best known (to the extent that anything Ron Sexsmith does is known) because a second version was released on which Sexsmith duets with Coldplay’s Chris Martin. I’ve even seen the song posted online as a Coldplay tune featuring Ron Sexsmith (silly Coldplay fans!).

The two versions are nearly identical. In fact, it took me a little while to distinguish Martin’s vocals from Sexsmith’s the first time I heard it. But the Random iTunes Fairy settled on the original, Martin-less version for today’s weekend selection.

I consider this a much better song musically than lyrically. While the message is nice, the text is a bit too Hallmark for my tastes. But the piano is lovely.

I know it doesn’t seem that way
But maybe it’s the perfect day
Even though the bills are piling
Maybe Lady Luck ain’t smiling

But if we’d only open our eyes
We’d see the blessings in disguise
That all the rain clouds are fountains
Though our troubles seem like mountains

There’s gold in them hills
There’s gold in them hills
So don’t lose heart
Give the day a chance to start

Every now and then life says
Where do you think you’re going so fast
We’re apt to think it cruel but sometimes
It’s a case of cruel to be kind

And if we’d get up off our knees
Well then we’d see the forest for the trees
And we’d see the new sun rising
Over the hills on the horizon

There’s gold in them hills
There’s gold in them hills
So don’t lose faith
Give the world a chance to say
A word or two, my friend
There’s no telling how the day might end
And we’ll never know until we see
That there’s gold in them hills

There’s gold in them hills
So don’t lose heart
Give the day a chance to start
There’s gold in them hills

This song does nothing for me musically, and the lyrics are fairly awful. I’m surprised this even caught Martin’s attention.

  2. Andrea Katz says:

I really like it! I find it moving and comforting. I guess I am now officially a sap.

  3. Cat says:

Not sure what you mean when you say first appearance this year. I have had the pleasure of seeing Ron 4 times so far this year. Next gig is St Catherine’s in October.

  4. Clay says:

His first appearance on this blog.
