Song of the Day #1,827: ‘Suga Mama’ – Beyoncé

bday_beyonceThrough some cosmic coincidence, Beyoncé happened to be playing the Staples Center in Los Angeles the very week we were in town. If fate had cooperated, we would have run into her at a restaurant or something and I would be posting a photo here of myself at her side. No such luck.

I jokingly suggested that the family should attend the show (jokingly because it was long sold out and the only available tickets online went for hundreds of dollars apiece) and my wife suggested it would be absurd for me to attend a Beyoncé concert because I don’t know most of her songs (as if that matters).

She challenged me to name ten Beyoncé songs — a challenge I met successfully, albeit with some struggling for the last couple of titles. I realized later that I left out one of my very favorite of her songs (‘If I Were a Boy’) so I deserve even more credit.

At any rate, when I saw Beyoncé’s second solo album, B’Day in the Amoeba Music used bins for a few bucks, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to expand my musical knowledge of the woman who tops my laminated list.

The record is rather weak… R&B just isn’t my genre. I still maintain that Rihanna, despite having a far weaker voice than Beyoncé, has a much stronger catalog (her last album notwithstanding).

But for three bucks and change, the chance to own this album cover along with the art on the accompanying liner notes was more than worth it.

[Intro]
Damn that was so good I wanna buy him a short set

[Verse 1]
I’ma be like a jolly rancher that you get from the corner store
I’ma be like a waffle cone that’s dripping down to the floor
The way you do if for me I can’t lie
About to be up in the mall all night
Whatever I get you putting it on
Don’t give me no lip let mama do it all

[Chorus]
Let me be, I wants to be, gots to be
Your suga give mama some suga mama
Suga mama
I’m your suga mama
Let me be, I wants to be, gots to be
New whip, new heavy on the wrist
Cause I’m a suga ma-ma-mama
I’m your suga mama, suga mama
Come sit on mama lap

[Verse 2]
It’s so good to the point that I’d
Do anything to keep you home
Baby what you want me to buy
My accountant’s waiting on the phone
Just the thought of making love to you
Dropping everything that’s what I’ll do
Whatever I get you putting it on
Now take it off while I watch you perform

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
And I’ve always been the type to take care of mine
I know just what I’m doing
Don’t you worry it’s cool and everything is steady
Puttin’ you on my taxes already, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I promise I won’t let no bills get behind
Cause every touch, every kiss and hug
You ‘bes believe it’ll be on time
Suga mama mama mama yeah yeah yeah

[Chorus]

[Outro]
Give you all my money baby
Honey I’ll call sumthing crazy
Take my credit card
The key to my house
Take my car

Ah, there’s the comment box! Okay, so what I was going to say this morning was that it amazes me you could name 10 songs from someone whose music you barely like. I don’t think I could do that for anyone other than my two or three favorite artists and maybe some long timers like the Stones.

I find today’s song rather catchy, but I have the same issue with Beyonce as I have with Christina Aguilera. When you have a voice that good with such range, why do this kind of music that anyone with a one octave range could pull off? Seems like a waste (though “Single Ladies” is great even with the limited vocal range)

Oh, and finally, have you seen the latest almost nude painted sprinkles over the body pics of Beyonce? Holy moly!

I have indeed seen those pictures, though I am even more impressed by the Instagram shot she recently posted.

I bet you could name more Beyonce songs than you think.

LOL! The thought of even trying to think of ten Beyonce songs gives me agita!
