Song of the Day #1,770: ‘Over the Love’ – Florence + The Machine

florence_machineBear with me on this one, but I think Florence + The Machine and Adele are having the same career.

Consider: Both acts released debut albums that were decent but unremarkable, notable for one hit single that towered above everything else on the record. Then both dropped sophomore records that surpassed even the highest expectations, reaching unexpected heights both critically and commercially.

Everybody knows the success story of Adele’s 21, but Florence + The Machine’s Ceremonials is just as strong a record. Every song is a tour de force that celebrates lead singer Florence Welch’s incredible vocals.

Welch is just a year older than Adele and both women were born in London. Though their fans engage on “who’s the better singer” battles on online message boards, Florence and Adele are friends.

Adele’s follow-up to her smash album was the theme song to the film Skyfall, for which she deservedly won an Oscar. Florence + The Machine’s follow-up to Ceremonials is this soundtrack contribution to The Great Gatsby.

It’s a good song, though I don’t think they’ll take home an Academy Award for it. This round goes to Adele.

Ever since I was a child
I’ve turned it over in my mind
I sang by the piano
Tore my yellow dress and
cried and cried and cried
And I don’t want to see what I’ve seen
To undo what has been done
Turn off all the lights
And let the morning come, come

Now there’s green light in my eyes
And my lover on my mind
And I sing from the piano
Tear my yellow dress and
cry and cry and cry
over the love of you

On this champagne-drunken home
Against the current of old
Everybody see I love him
‘Cause it’s a feeling that you get
When the afternoon is set
On the bridge into the city

And I don’t want to see what I’ve seen
To undo what has been done
Turn off all the lights
Let the morning come

Now there’s green light in my eyes
And my lover on my mind
And I sing from the piano
Tear my yellow dress and
cry and cry and cry

‘Cause you’re a hard soul to save
with an ocean in the way
But I’ll get around it
I’ll get around it
‘Cause you’re a hard soul to save
with an ocean in the way
But I’ll get around it

Now there’s green light in my eyes
And my lover on my mind
And I sing from the piano
Tear my yellow dress and
cry and cry and cry and
over the love of you
Cry and cry and cry and
over the love of you
cry and cry and cry and
[I can see the green light
I can see it in your eyes]
over the love of you
cry, cry, cry, cry
I can see the green light
I can see it in your eyes
I can see the green light
I can see it in your eyes
I can see the green light
I can see it in your eyes

Going through a few of these posts in a row makes me want to skip work and head straight to the movie theater to see the film again. It was so wonderful and the music worked so well in it. I don’t own a Florence and the Machine album, but I love all of the songs that have had any radio play. “Dog Days” was probably the first one on my radar (does Adele have a song about cats? ;)

I find the intensity and vibrato in Florence’s voice a bit off putting at times. Not sure i would enjoy a steady diet of their music. So I give the edge to Adele.

This song, though, works well with the intensity and mood of the film. Still, it ain’t no Skyfall!

I give the edge to Florence all the way!! But then, i’m sure you all know that. Love this song, and everything I have heard by her. I find her intensity and vibrato perfect. Just gonna leave it at that :P
