Song of the Day #1,750: ‘She Will’ – Savages

savagesLast week I featured a band described by critics as “post-rock” and wondered what exactly that meant. Today I bring you a song by a band called Savages, who have been described as “post-punk.”

From what I can gather, post-punk is basically pretentious punk, or to put it less judgmentally, punk with a little more thought behind the art.

Savages is a quartet of British women whose debut album is due out next month. Their first single, ‘She Will,’ is making all kinds of waves on the sort of websites that use the term post-punk.

I like the opening of the song and the verses but the chorus, as you can gather by looking at the lyrics below, is — understatement alert! — a little on the repetitive side. If this were regular punk and not post-punk, she would repeat the title 14 times rather than 28.

She will enter the room
She will enter the bed
She will talk like a friend
She will kiss like a man
She will fuck other man
She will come back again
Get hooked on loving hard,
Forcing the slut out!

Chorus:
Yeah, you got to get used to it
And get your heart a little kick!
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
Oh, oh, oh, oh

She’ll look in the heart
She will look in the lips
She will choose to ignite
And never to extinguish!
She will forgive her pain
Get hooked on loving hard,
Forcing the slut out!
Oh, oh, oh, oh

Chorus:
Yeah, you got to get used to it
And get your heart a little kick!
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
She will, she will
Oh, oh, oh, oh

Love your final observation :) As i mentioned the other day, it seems that anything that follows must either be retro or post, no? It can’t simply BE the same, as the time that has passed demands that the new form be commenting in some way – whether as a reaction or a celebration – of that which came before.

    Regardless, I hate it. :)

Second favorite moment of the morning… Daniel reads over my shoulder and says, “you hated that song? But it has such lyrical value. I mean…. ‘forcing the slut out’…. ” Ah, post-punk genius!

The verses are tolerable, but the chorus makes me want to engage in acts of violence, and that’s probably not a good thing.

Would make a lovely first dance at my next wedding…
