Song of the Day #1,739: ‘In the City’ – Caveman

caveman_in_the_cityCaveman is an indie band from Brooklyn that has released two albums over the past two years. AllMusic describes their sound as a blend of “experimental rock, post-rock, wistful indie rock, and African music traditions.”

Listening to ‘In the City,’ the single from their self-titled new release, I’m hearing a whole lot of 80s influence — it sounds like a long lost Tears For Fears track. And in my book that’s a very good thing.

But given the wide range of sounds attributed to the band in that write-up, is this track an anomaly? Could it be the equivalent of somebody hearing a track off of Elvis Costello’s album of country covers and thinking they’d stumbled onto a great new country artist?

That said, “wistful indie rock” and “African music traditions” also sound right up my alley, so maybe I’d like the rest of Caveman’s work as well. “Experimental rock,” I’m not so sure. And I have no idea what “post rock” is — do you?

We’re in the city
She came around at the right time
And if you’ll need me
Hope this was made for a good time

Where did you see me?
How do you run for a long time?
Then if you need me
Hope this was made for a good time

It’s like the ones who only know
It seems like the ones who always go
I don’t want to go
I don’t want to go

We’re in the city
Oh! She came around at the right time
And if you need me
Hope this was made for a good time

It’s like the run to all we know
Seems like we want to always go
We’re in the city
She came around at the right time
And if you’ll need me
Hope this was made for a good time

Where did you see me?
How do you run for a long time?
Then if you need me
Hope this was made for a good time

It’s like the ones who only know
It seems like the ones who always go
I don’t want to go
I don’t want to go

We’re in the city
Oh! She came around at the right time
And if you need me
Hope this was made for a good time

It’s like the run to all we know
Seems like we want to always go
I don’t want to know
I don’t want to know

I like this song a lot. Judging by this song alone I would also think that there is a bit of pop/electronica in their wide variation of genres. This song is definitley one you could hear on the radio.

I suspect Amy was the author of that comment.😄

I have no idea what post-rock is, but, given the influences you cite, I too would be curious to hear more.

Post-rock, AKA pebble rock is just a smaller version of regular rock. Sometimes criticized for being a bit on the gravelly side. :) Liked the song and the video very much.

  4. Amy says:

Amy was absolutely not the author of that comment. Daniel was intrigued by the song and wanted to comment. I haven’t had a chance to read the post until right now.

post-Rock?? Never heard that term before, but I would anticipate it means the same thing as any “post” reference…. in that it’s a reaction to that which comes before. This music must, in some respect, be responding to traditional rock. When I finish proctoring this test, I’ll give it a proper listen and see if I can figure out why. :)

  6. Dana says:

Well, I owe my son an apology! Well written comment, guy!
