Song of the Day #1,727: ‘Merry Go ‘Round’ – Kacey Musgraves

kacey_musgraves_same_trailerA couple of years ago I finally succumbed to all of the great things I’d been reading about Miranda Lambert and bought a couple of her albums.

Regular readers of this blog know that I fell hard for her blend of sass and sensitivity, and songwriting chops I’d never associated with country music.

Well, over the past week or so I’ve had a weird sense of deja vu. I’ve read high praise of Kacey Musgraves, a country singer who just released her major label debut, in Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone and the Web.

Every article compares her to Lambert, with good reason. She is a fellow Texan who also placed in the top ten on Nashville Star, and to top things off she penned Lambert’s wonderful ‘Mama’s Broken Heart.’

I didn’t have much choice but to order Musgrave’s album, Same Trailer Different Park, and hope that lightning will strike twice. As I write this, the CD has arrived in the mail (yes, I still occasionally buy actual CD’s) but I haven’t listened to it yet. I’ll report back with my findings.

In the meantime, here’s the first single, ‘Merry Go ‘Round,’ which I like quite a bit.

If you ain’t got two kids by 21,
You’re probably gonna die alone
At least that’s what tradition told you.

And it don’t matter if you don’t believe,
Come Sunday morning you best be there
In the front row, like you’re s’posed to.

Same hurt in every heart.
Same trailer, different park.

Mama’s hooked on Mary Kay
Brother’s hooked on Mary Jane
And Daddy’s hooked on Mary two doors down.

Mary Mary quite contrary,
We get bored so we get married
And just like dust we settle in this town.
On this broken merry go ’round and ’round and ’round we go,
Where it stops nobody knows…
And it ain’t slowin’ down, this merry go ’round…

We think the first time’s good enough,
So we hold on to high school love,
Say we won’t end up like our parents.

Tiny little boxes in a row,
Ain’t what you want it’s what you know,
Just happy in the shoes you’re wearin’.

Same checks we’re always cashin’,
To buy a little more distraction.

Cause Mama’s hooked on Mary Kay
Brother’s hooked on Mary Jane
Daddy’s hooked on Mary two doors down.

Mary Mary quite contrary,
We get bored so we get married
And just like dust we settle in this town.
On this broken merry go ’round and ’round and ’round we go,
Where we stop nobody knows…
And it ain’t slowin’ down, this merry go ’round…

Mary Mary quite contrary,
We’re so bored until we’re buried.
And just like dust we settle in this town.
On this broken merry go ’round…
Merry go ’round…

Jack and Jill went up the hill,
Jack burned out on booze and pills,
And Mary had a little lamb,
Mary just don’t give a damn no more.

Loved the lyrics but couldn’t play this as it is “restricted from playback on certain sites”. Certainly would be curious as to what this sounds like. Curses to this censorship!

  2. Dana says:

Well, I always love when you expand your country music horizonsčśä this song is nice though.
