Song of the Day #1,694: ‘Empty Room’ – Arcade Fire

suburbsThe most upbeat track musically (so far) on Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs is also the most depressing lyrically. This album is definitely darker than I expected.

‘Empty Room’ is brash and loud (a little too brash and too loud for my taste) but the mindset it depicts is one of utter loneliness. What a sad image… saying somebody’s name in an empty room.

The line “When I’m by myself, I can be myself” rings true for my inner adolescent, as does its follow-up, “my life is coming but I don’t know when.” This is a young person dying to experience life but afraid to try.

If The Suburbs is telling a story, it’s doing so in something other than chronological order. This song, the album’s fifth, would be second of the five I’ve featured so far if I were arranging them that way.

Knowing (from an earlier song) what awaits this kid in the real world makes his longing to get there even more poignant.

Said your name, in an empty room.
Said your name, in an empty room.
Something I would never do.

Said your name, in an empty room.
Said your name, in an empty room.
Something I would never do.

I’m alone again.

When I’m by myself,
I can be myself,
And my life is coming but I don’t know when.

You were burning now you’re black and grey.
You were burning now you’re black and grey.
Something I would never say.

I’m alone again.

When I’m by myself,
I can be myself,
And my life is coming but I don’t know when.

Toute ma vie, est avec toi.
Toute ma vie, est avec toi.
Moi J’attends, toi tu pars.

Toute ma vie, est avec toi.
Toute ma vie, est avec toi.
Moi J’attends, toi tu pars.

If U2 and abba had a baby, it might be this song.
