Song of the Day #1,693: ‘Rococo’ – Arcade Fire

suburbs‘Rococo’ jumps right from the “modern man” of the previous track to the “modern kids” who use “great big words that they don’t understand.”

This song is a rather vicious dissection of hipsters (a popular target based on my experience reading web comment boards). Butler seems to be taking down the same people who looked down on his commercial aspirations in ‘Ready to Start.’

The image of these modern kids building things up just to tear them back down seems particularly apt in the world of pop culture, where an artist is only legitimate when he’s a hidden treasure and success equals selling out.

This is a dark and moody track, musically, quite different from ‘Modern Man.’ Both songs are pessimistic but this one is fueled with real contempt, while the other is tinged more with confusion and acceptance.

Let’s go downtown and watch the modern kids
Let’s go downtown and talk to the modern kids
They will eat right out of your hand
Using great big words that they don’t understand

They’re singing
Rococo, Rococo, Rococo, Rococo…
Rococo, Rococo, Rococo, Rococo…

They build it up just to burn it back down
They build it up just to burn it back down
The wind is blowing all the ashes around
Oh my dear God what is that horrible song?

They’re singing
Rococo, Rococo, Rococo, Rococo…
Rococo, Rococo, Rococo, Rococo…

They seem wild but they are so tame
They seem wild but they are so tame
They’re moving towards you with their colors all the same
They want to own you but they don’t know what game
They’re playing

Rococo, Rococo, Rococo, Rococo
Rococo, Rococo, Rococo, Rococo

Still doing nothing for me. Do you think you would ever find yourself in the mood to play something like this? I wouldn’t.

  2. Clay says:

I’ve been playing it a lot the past couple of weeks and enjoying it. I think that, contrary to your comments, it’s very emotionally resonant.

  3. Phil says:

Here’s a good song of the day for you…Tom Jones “Tower of Song”…the Leonard Cohen song…unbelievably great video.
