Song of the Day #1,681: ‘The One You Love’ – Randy Newman

newmanbadloveRandy Newman can probably write songs like this one in his sleep, but that doesn’t stop it from being freaking awesome. It’s amazing how much mileage he can get out of a jaunty New Orleans musical backdrop and some conversational lyrics.

For me, the genius of this song comes right in the first verse, when Newman says/sings “She may be hungry, but she won’t say. You better get a burger or something in her right away. If you don’t, you’re gonna pay.”

“Get a burger or something in her” — is there any better way to put that? No, there isn’t.

You’ve got to learn to get to know the one you love.
To anticipate her ev’ry move,
you got to know exactly what she’s thinking of.
She may be hungry but she won’t say.
You better get a burger or something in her right away.
If you don’t, you’re gonna pay
at the hand of the one you love.
(The one you love, the one you love.)

Young man, you’re running free, you’re running wild.
You fall in love, you become nothing but a little baby child.
She can hurt you with the sound of her voice.
You can leave her but you got no choice.
You can’t leave her, man, you’re just a pris’ner of the one you love.
(The one you love, the one you love.)

True love never runs smooth, you know.
Sometimes there’ll be sunny days,
sometimes there’ll be sleet and snow.
When true love calls you, man, you gotta go.
And when you gotta go, you gotta go.

You got to know the one you love.
You got to know the one you love.
(The one you love, the one you love.
The one you love, the one you love.)

Once, a great man’s heart was captured by a lovely chest.
He told himself it was her mind he loved,
but he was blind like all the rest.
Twenty hard years went by
till another chest will catch his eye.
He just hung his head and cried
and said, “Sorry dear, you’re too late.
I’ve already ruined my life.”

You’ve got to know the one you love.
She may be gentle, she may be kind,
she may not know exactly what’s on her mind.
But you better know,
or you’re gonna find you lose the one you love.
(The one you love, the one you love.)
The one you love.
(The one you love, the one you love.)
The one you love
(The one you love, the one you love.)
The one you love.

Newman has ventured into different styles of music from pop to country to electronic to rap, either as a means to achieve more commercial success or perhaps to perpetuate musical satire (at least that is what I hope he was trying to do with the electronic and rap styles), but there is no doubt that his musical sweet spot is in this type of ragtime sound.

What I admire so much about Newman is his ability to bounce between this sardonic tone and the earnest and touching lyrics he writes just as well (though not nearly as frequently). I don’t know that I like one style more than the other, but I definitely appreciate all the songs all the more knowing that they spring out of the same brain. He may just be my favorite songwriter. Period.

I loved this book. It was an amazing story. It melted you invoked and worried about Emma herself. The only thing is that it is very slow paced. I was really excites when I was reaching the end, but you find out that there is a squeal to the book. But I am very excited to begin reading it.

One of my favorites among favorites from Eandy Newman and in general. Thank you for writing about it and making the audio available, so I can bring friends into the fold.
