One of my favorite annual traditions on this blog is my exploration of the Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll, a compilation of the best albums and singles of the year according to hundreds of music critics.
I’ve discovered some great songs through this process (which I’ve gone through twice before) as well as some real head-scratchers. The neat thing is that I don’t which I’ll get until I sit down to write each entry.
Topping the singles chart this year is Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe,’ an obvious winner given the song’s ubiquity. You might expect a critics’ poll to avoid such bubble gum fare, but in fact, I’ve noticed just the opposite. It seems like pop and R&B hits are more critically acclaimed now than ever before.
A case in point is today’s SOTD, Miguel’s ‘Adore,’ which comes in second on the Pazz & Jop singles poll. Miguel is a relative newcomer, part of the neo-soul movement that also includes Frank Ocean and Bruno Mars.
I’ve never heard this song before, so I’ll give it a spin now and return with my first impressions.
Um… in a word, shit. It’s not offensive in any way, but THIS is supposed to be the second best single of 2012? It’s about as generic an R&B ballad as I can imagine, with the added bonus of a repeated dub-steppy bass line. Yawn!
I hope this is an exception and not a trend.
And These Eyes, can’t wait to see your grin
Just let my love, Just let my love adorn you
And You gotta know, You gotta know
You know that I adore you….Yeah Baby
Baby these fists, uh, will always protect ya… Lady
And this mind ooh will never neglect you, yeah baby
And if they try to break us down
Don’t let that affect us, noo baby
You just gotta let my love
Let my love
Let my love adorn you
Ahh, le-le-le-let it just adorn you
You gotta know
