Song of the Day #1,659: ‘Losing You’ – Solange

solange_losing_youTalk about growing up in the shadow of greatness.

Solange is Beyoncé’s little sister, a young woman who no doubt wants to be the Eli Manning of pop/R&B music, but better hope she doesn’t wind up the Stephen Baldwin.

While Solange is a pale imitation of her goddess older sister, and this song is forgettable, I do love the video.

Directed by Melina Matsoukas, the clip was shot in Cape Town, South Africa, and beautifully captures that setting. It reminds me of City of God or Y Tu Mama Tambien in the way it establishes a sense of place through its cinematography.

Matsoukas has shot dozens of videos, including some of the best work by Beyoncé and Rihanna (including the powerful, award-winning video for ‘We Found Love’). I’d like to see her branch out into feature films, like so many video directors before her… she definitely has the gift.

Tell me the truth, boy, am I losing you for good
We use to kiss all night, but now there’s just no use
I don’t know why I fight it, clearly we are through
Tell me the truth, boy, am I losing you for good

I know you’re waiting for the words that you can’t get from me
Just treat me good and I’ll give you the rest of me
I’m not the one that you should be making your enemy
I’m not the one that you should be making your enemy

Tell me the truth, boy, am I losing you for good
We use to kiss all night, but now there’s just no use
I don’t know why I fight it, clearly we are through
Tell me the truth, boy, am I losing you for good

There’s nothing more, I know you’re taking it away from me
I gave you everything and now there’s nothing left of me
I’m not the one that you should be making your enemy
I’m not the one that you should be making your enemy

Tell me the truth, boy, am I losing you for good
We use to kiss all night, but now there’s just no use
I don’t know why I fight it, clearly we are through
Tell me the truth, boy, am I losing you for good

Tell me the truth, boy, am I losing you for good
(baby, you know I tried)
(can’t lose you from my life)
We use to kiss all night, but now there’s just no use
(baby, you know I tried)
(how could you waste my time)
I don’t know why I fight it, clearly we are through
(baby, you know I)
(can’t lose you from my life)
Tell me the truth, boy, am I losing you for good
(baby, you know I)

Not sure why she is a pale imitation of her sister. I’m guessing both her hair and her voice are more authentic ;)

This song is as good as anything else I’ve heard on the radio, and if having Beyonce and Jay-Z in the family doesn’t help you get a break, then something is not quite right. I don’t see what in this video makes you think the director should start making movies, but I do like the sense of play and place captured here.

That’s a lot of hair on that woman.

  3. Andrea Katz says:

The setting was great, the song insipid and the legs amazing. She is easy on the eyes and maybe capable of better if the song was more interesting?

This is such a shit review. The song, which has ended up on quite a few top of 2012 lists, is fantastic, and on par with anything else BeyoncĂ© has ever done. You promote this as song of the day, yet go on to say it’s forgettable, so you make yourself look like an idiot really.

Well, that’s just, like, your opinion, man…

    Great review!
