Song of the Day #1,656: ‘R U Mine?’ – Arctic Monkeys

arctic_monkeysNext up in my series of memorable 2012 videos is a clip from British indie rock band Arctic Monkeys.

The band has been on the back burner for several years after blowing up in 2006 with one of the fastest-selling independent rock albums in history. They were pointed to as poster children for a new era in which a major label wasn’t necessary for major success.

‘R U Mine?’ was released early in 2012 as a digital download. The video is (presumably) shot in one take and features the band’s lead singer and drummer lip-synching to the song while driving. As the whip the camera around, other people occasionally show up in the front and back seats.

That’s a neat trick if the clip is indeed one uninterrupted take. The presence of occasional static ripples throughout make me wonder if this is actually several shots edited together with those effects in place to mask the transition. But either way it’s nicely put together.

My favorite part is when the singer moves to the back of the vehicle and sings into the car’s reverse cam while we watch him in the dash. Nice use of soccer mom technology in the service of punk rock.

I’m a Puppet on a string
Tracy island, time-traveling diamond
Coulda shaped heartaches
Come to find ya fall in some velvet morning
Years too late
She’s a silver lining lone ranger riding
Through an open space
In my mind when she’s not right there beside me

I go crazy cause here isn’t where I wanna be
And satisfaction feels like a distant memory
And I can’t help myself,
All I wanna hear her say is “Are you mine?”

Are you mine?
Are you mine?
Are you mine?

I guess what I’m trying to say is I need the deep end
Keep imagining meeting, wished away entire lifetimes
Unfair we’re not somewhere misbehaving for days
Great escape lost track of time and space
She’s a silver lining climbing on my desire

And I go crazy cause here isn’t where I wanna be
And satisfaction feels like a distant memory
And I can’t help myself,
All I wanna hear her say is “Are you mine?”

Are you mine?
Are you mine?
Are you mine?

And the thrill of the chase moves in mysterious ways
So in case I’m mistaken,
I just wanna hear you say you got me baby
Are you mine?

She’s a silver lining lone ranger riding through an open space
In my mind when she’s not right there beside me
And I go crazy cause here isn’t where I wanna be

And satisfaction feels like a distant memory
And I can’t help myself,
All I wanna hear her say is “Are you mine?”

Well are you mine?
Are you mine?
Are you mine?

Interesting video, but don’t care much for the song.
