Song of the Day #1,654: ‘Elastic Love’ – Christina Aguilera

christina_aguilera_bionicChristina Aguilera has had a strange career. She started out hot, riding the same Mickey Mouse Club teen starlet wave that gave us Britney Spears, but then cooled off quickly. Her sexed-up sophomore album, Stripped, came across as dirty rather than provocative.

She rebounded well with Back to Basics, an excellent double album that showcased her amazing voice and earned both critical raves and strong sales. But then she disappeared for a few years before appearing in the 2010 bomb Burlesque and releasing Bionic, a weak collection that sounded like an attempt to become Lady Gaga.

Again, she recovered quickly, landing a spot on the runaway TV hit The Voice, where she seemed poised for a career reinvention. But that stint last only three seasons (she has been replaced by Shakira) and was met with its fair share of criticism. And her “comeback” album, Lotus, received some of her most tepid reviews to date.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Aguilera has another great album in her. The seesaw nature of her career seems to demand it.

Today’s track is from Bionic, and while I must admit that the opening beat is pretty slick, I just can’t support a song that includes the lines “a rubber band was an analogy, you can even say it’s a metaphor.” No dance track should lapse into an English class assignment.

A rubber band is what I call your love for me
‘Cause it comes and goes and pins me like a trampoline
But all this back and forth is freaky, it’s confusing me
Like a pencil trying to write and you’re erasing me

If I was a ruler I’d set you straight
But your love is like a sharpener, it really grates
‘Cause once I’m trying to bounce, you pull me back
And when I try to come to you, you give me slack

Your love is pulling like a rubber band
Your love is pulling like a rubber band

Elastic love, everlastic love
Ever lusting love, such a spastic love
Elastic love, everlastic love
Ever lusting love, such a spastic love

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la

A rubber band was an analogy
You can even say it’s a metaphor
The tension between you and me
I ain’t gonna feel it if you let it go

I can take a little bit and make it more
A little bit of hate can make it war
But a lot of love ain’t enough
And so, I don’t really know how we find the cure

Your love is pulling like a rubber band
Your love is pulling like a rubber band

Elastic love, everlastic love
Ever lusting love, such a spastic love
Elastic love, everlastic love
Ever lusting love, such a spastic love

Paper clips, they couldn’t even hold us together
Paper clips, they couldn’t even hold us together
Paper clips, they couldn’t even hold us together

If we were gaffer tape maybe we could spend the summer
You could say your piece, you could post it on a paper
When your love hits, it sticks me like a stapler

Your love is pulling like a rubber band
Your love is pulling like a rubber band

Elastic love, everlastic love
Ever lusting love, such a spastic love
Elastic love, everlastic love
Ever lusting love, such a spastic love

Elastic love, everlastic love
Ever lusting love, such a spastic love
Elastic love, everlastic love
Ever lusting love, such a spastic love

Okay, this song is awful. Why someone who actually has a voice (unlike Rihanna) would record this type of crap is beyond me.

By the way, I thought she was just taking a hiatus from The Voice. Is she not returning?

  2. Amy says:

Actually the English assignment aspect of the song is by far my favorite part of it. I’m with Dana…. why on earth would Christina, who can sing anything, choose to sing THIS?

And, yes, Christina and Cee-Lo will both be back. They asked to take the season off to tour. Theoretically, Adam and Blake are going to do the same in an upcoming season. The Voice producers ultimately want a cast of 8 – 12 they can move around and pair up differently each season. We’ll see. I loved the chemistry of the original four, but I have high hopes for Usher! ;)

  3. Daniel says:

This song is awful… it shows no vocals, and it’s just flat out annoying! Christina Aguilera needs to stick to spinning chairs and making Disney songs.

  4. Andrea Katz says:

I love the new insights provided by Daniel. You rock!
    This song is punishing…
