Song of the Day #1,634: ‘Jericho’ – Rufus Wainwright

Contrary to the title of his latest album, Out of the Game, Rufus Wainwright got very much back into the game this year with his first pop release since 2007.

His last album was 2010’s All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu, a collection of somber ballads for piano and vocals that was very much informed by the sickness of his mother, who died just before its release.

Lulu was a powerful collection, but not exactly easy listening. Out of the Game, on the other hand, is full of great hooks and melodies and a sense of mischievous fun that highlights Wainwright’s best work.

Standout track ‘Jericho’ shows Wainwright at his finest, both as a writer and a performer. The song really takes off during its bridge, which soars with the 70s flair that typifies much of this great album.

I’ve read that ‘Jericho’ is directed at the Pope and the Catholic church, an institution that “ain’t ever gonna change” and hides behind a “medieval ceiling behind [a] biblical wall.” That strikes me as a solid interpretation, though I could also see this song directed to an ex.

I keep thinking that you are going to change
I keep thinking that you are going to rearrange
But I’m a fool to think something so impossible
You ain’t ever gonna change
You ain’t ever gonna change
Oh no, Jericho
Until I blow

I keep thinking that you are going to rise
I keep thinking that you are going to compromise
But I’m a fool to think something so improbable
You ain’t ever gonna rise
You ain’t ever gonna rise
Oh no, Jericho
Until I take you by surprise

Baby I know that you’re too sad to cry
But my little darling guess what? So am I
Still I believe we ought to shed a tear
The open hearted have no thing to fear

But I don’t even think you hear me at all
Under your medieval ceiling behind your biblical wall
Guess I’ll have to put my trumpet back in the case
And get behind this here cannon covered in lace
Covered in lace

I keep thinking that you are going to change
I keep that you are going to rearrange
But I’m a fool to think something so impossible
You ain’t ever gonna change
You ain’t ever gonna change
Oh no, Jericho
Until I blow
Until I blow
