Song of the Day #1,614: ‘Stronger’ – Kelly Clarkson

kelly_clarksonKelly Clarkson is one of those artists who releases blockbuster singles every couple of years and maintains radio silence otherwise.

Her biggest hits are instantly recognizable, pure pop pleasure. But I defy anybody but an ardent fan to name a single other track from a Kelly Clarkson album.

Train is another act that falls into this category. They’ve been at it longer, but they seem to either be invisible or have the summer’s hugest hit.

I suppose the difference between Clarkson and, say, Ben Folds or Elvis Costello is that the latter have never had those monster hits in between the quiet moments. Generally you have your persistent hit-makers and your under-the-radar acts, but Clarkson manages to straddle that fence.

You know the bed feels warmer
Sleeping here alone
You know I dream in color
And do the things I want

You think you got the best of me
Think you’ve had the last laugh
Bet you think that everything good is gone
Think you left me broken down
Think that I’d come running back
Baby you don’t know me, cause you’re dead wrong

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone
What doesn’t kill you makes a fighter
Footsteps even lighter
Doesn’t mean I’m over cause you’re gone

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, stronger
Just me, myself and I
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone

You heard that I was starting over with someone new
They told you I was moving on, over you

You didn’t think that I’d come back
I’d come back swinging
You try to break me, but you see

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone
What doesn’t kill you makes a fighter
Footsteps even lighter
Doesn’t mean I’m over cause you’re gone

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, stronger
Just me, myself and I
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone

Thanks to you I got a new thing started
Thanks to you I’m not the broken-hearted
Thanks to you I’m finally thinking about me
You know in the end the day you left was just my beginning
In the end…

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone
What doesn’t kill you makes a fighter
Footsteps even lighter
Doesn’t mean I’m over cause you’re gone

[2x]
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, stronger
Just me, myself and I
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone

(When I’m alone)

  1. Dana says:

Well, I assume a fan of clarkson could name album tracks, as could train fans. All it takes is buying and listening to the album, which many have but we have not.

Anyway, I find this song fairly compelling. A good feminist anthem, though I’m not sure if that was what she intended.
