Song of the Day #1,613: ‘Everybody Talks’ – Neon Trees

neon_treesWhen I compile my end-of-year song list, I start with the music I’ve purchased over the past 12 months. Then I hit Google, seeking out year-end wrap-ups that might remind me of a song that I never got around to buying but nevertheless captured my attention.

Invariably those sites lead me to songs that were completely off my radar but might have had a good chance of making my list had I only known they existed.

‘Everybody Talks’ by Neon Trees is such a track. It has a retro appeal, an irresistible shout-along chorus and the kind of cool confidence that typifies great summer singles.

I’m not sure how this one got past me. Apparently it was featured on Glee, so maybe if I hadn’t stopped watching that show I would have discovered this song in time for it to make my year-end list.

Note: The reason a song like this isn’t eligible for the list is that I’m looking to recap my year in music through the songs that accompanied my through 2012. It wouldn’t be right to drop in a song I heard for the first time the day before I made my list just because I dig it.

Hey baby won’t you look my way
I can be your new addiction
Hey baby what you gotta say?
All you’re giving me is fiction
I’m a sorry sucker and this happens all the time
I found out that everybody talks
Everybody talks, everybody talks

It started with a whisper
And that was when I kissed her
And then she made my lips hurt
I could hear the chit chat
Take me to your love shack
Mamas always gotta back track
When everybody talks back

Hey honey you could be my drug
You could be my new prescription
Too much could be an overdose
All this trash talk make me itchin’
Oh my my
Everybody talks, everybody talks
Everybody talks, too much

It started with a whisper
And that was when I kissed her
And then she made my lips hurt
I could hear the chit chat
Take me to your love shack
Mamas always gotta back track
When everybody talks back

Never thought I’d live
To see the day
When everybody’s words got in the way

Hey sugar show me all your love
All you’re giving me is friction
Hey sugar what you gotta say?

It started with a whisper
And that was when I kissed her
And then she made my lips hurt
I could hear the chit chat
Take me to your love shack
Mamas always gotta back track
When everybody talks back

Everybody talks, everybody talks
Everybody talks, everybody talks
Everybody talks, everybody talks back

It started with a whisper
And that was when I kissed her

Everybody talks, everybody talks back

Well, I’m not sure you not having heard this song ranks quite as high as your failure to have heard the black eyed peas'”I got a feeling,” but it’s a close call.

This was one of the highlight songs of the year for me, and I think the song mostly works because of the vocals. Reminds me a bit of something INXS might have done back in the day. Good stuff.

We will be seeing neon trees when they open for Maroon 5. Hope their other material holds up.

Here is a link to the Glee cover, which will not only give you another listen to the song but also introduce you to two of the new characters. Had you just flipped channels and wound up here, you might think you were watching a Glee knock-off (but for the telltale Cheerios uniform and the glimpse of Artie, Mercedes, Mike and Finn watching the Grease auditions). “Kitty” makes early Quinn/Santana seem like Shirley Temple, but “Jake,” Puck’s younger half brother, is a worthwhile addition :)

Regardless, I love this song and was excited to hear Neon Trees and Owl City were the two opening acts for Maroon 5. That should be one hell of a concert.
