Song of the Day #1,610: ‘Crash Into Me’ – Dave Matthews Band

This song, and the 1996 album it comes from (Crash) represent the pinnacle of my Dave Matthews Band fandom.

After this, they lost me for a bit with Before These Crowded Streets, won me back temporarily with the unreleased Lillywhite Sessions and then disappeared from my radar completely when they officially released the borefest Everyday and the inferior but “official” version of the Lillywhite tracks, Busted Stuff.

The band has released only three albums in the decade since, including Away From the World this past September (produced by Steve Lillywhite in his first collaboration with the band since the controversial bootleg leaked).

But despite strong reviews for the most recent releases (one of which I actually bought and somewhat enjoyed my first time through) I just can’t muster the energy to care about this band anymore. Did I outgrow them? Did they outgrow me?

At any rate, Crash is still an excellent album, even if I haven’t listened to it since I was in my 20s.

Also, I can’t hear this song without chuckling at my brother-in-law’s misunderstanding of one lyric as “hike up your skirt, little boy, and show your world to me.”

You’ve got your ball,
You’ve got your chain
Tied to me tight, tie me up again.

Who’s got their claws
In you my friend?
Into your heart I’ll beat again

Sweet like candy to my soul
Sweet you rock,
And sweet you roll
Lost for you, I’m so lost for you

Oh, and you come crash into me
And I come into you
And I come into you
In a boy’s dream
In a boy’s dream

Touch your lips just so I know
In your eyes, love, it glows so
I’m bare-boned and crazy… for you.

Oh, and you come crash into me
Baby, and I come into you
In a boy’s dream
In a boy’s dream

And if I’ve gone overboard
Then I’m begging you
To forgive me
In my haste
When I’m holding you so girl,
Close to me

Oh and you come crash into me, yeah
Baby, and I come into you

Hike up your skirt a little more
And show your world to me
Hike up your skirt a little more
And show your world to me
In a boy’s dream
In a boy’s dream

Oh, I watch you there
Through the window
And I stare at you
You wear nothing, but you
Wear it so well
Tied up and twisted,
The way I’d like to be
For you, for me, come crash into me, baby
Come crash into me, yeah

Crash into me…
Crash into me…
Crash into me…

You know, I’m the king of the castle,
And you’re the dirty rascal, crash into me.
Please crash into me, baby…

I see the wave come and crash into me.
I See the wave come and crash into me.
Crash into me.

I still think that is the lyric!

I still maintain that you had a disproportionate adverse reaction to their music after this album, mostly fueled by your appreciation of a leaked bootleg over an official release. I suspect that had you not read so much about the “contoversy” of the sessions album, and simply had bought the official release and albums thereafter, you would not have soured so much on dmb.

Having said that, I can’t necessarily disagree that this album was probably the pinnacle of their work, though I haven’t heard the most recent albums.
