Song of the Day #1,579: ‘Save a Prayer’ – Duran Duran

In what’s emerging as a theme this week, I present Duran Duran, another 80s band that mostly escaped my radar when I was younger (and to this day).

I loved ‘Hungry Like the Wolf’ but by appreciation of the British New Wave band pretty much started and ended there.

It’s funny… 30 years ago, when iTunes would have seemed like something out a science fiction movie, I was far more into single songs than at any time since. The vehicle of choice for singles was the 45, and I had dozens of them.

Or else I’d sit by the radio with my fingers poised on the REC-PLAY buttons, hoping to capture my own copy of a new hit song — cursing the DJs who insisted on talking over the opening notes.

It wasn’t until my sophomore year of high school that I started following artists album by album rather than song by song. First it was Bob Dylan, then R.E.M., Simon & Garfunkel and Elvis Costello.

So the full-length albums of all of these 80s stars remain a mystery to me. I know Duran Duran’s classic album Rio for its three hits — the title song, ‘Hungry Like the Wolf’ and today’s SOTD — but I suspect it has many other gifts to offer.

You saw me standing by the wall corner of a main street
And the lights are flashing on your window sill
All alone ain’t much fun so you’re looking for the thrill
And you know just what it takes and where to go.

Don’t save a prayer for me now. Save it til the morning after
No don’t say a prayer for me now. Save it til the morning after

Feel the breeze deep on the inside look down into the well
If you can you’ll see the world in all his fire
Take a chance (like all dreamers can’t find another way)
You don’t have to dream it all, just live a day.

Don’t say a prayer for me now. Save it til the morning after
No don’t say a prayer for me now. Save it til the morning after
Save it til the morning after. Save it til the morning after

Pretty looking road I try to hold the rising floods that fill my skin
Don’t ask me why I’ll keep my promise I’ll melt the ice
And you wanted to dance so I asked you to dance
But fear is in your soul
Some people call it a one night stand but we can call it paradise

Don’t say a prayer for me now. Save it til the morning after
No don’t say a prayer for me now. Save it til the morning after
Save it til the morning after
Save it til the morning after
Save it til the morning after
Save it til the morning after
Save a prayer til the morning after

  1. Dana says:

As I said earlier, my appreciation for Duran Duran basically starts and ends with “Rio.” However, I’m okay with this song as a runner- up.

The song is missing … odd. Is this the infamous song? ;)
