Song of the Day #1,568: ‘Let it Ride’ – Ryan Adams & The Cardinals

I have a select group of artists whom I feel guilty for not listening to more. People who make consistently good music that’s right up my alley yet somehow rarely make it into my regular rotation.

Ryan Adams is a perfect example.

He has released at least two albums (Gold and Heartbreaker) that I love start to finish — albums filled with powerful, beautiful songs. His collection of unreleased singles, Demolition, is similarly strong.

Adams has taken some odd detours, such as the noisy rock album Rock n Roll, but more often he has stuck to the alt-country/indie rock sound that I love.

Today’s song comes from a double album Adams recorded with backing band The Cardinals, and it hits those same notes.

So why don’t I listen to him very often? I don’t have a good answer. I suspect it has to do with timing more than anything else. I didn’t discover his music at a time when I was prepared to dive into it and make it my own. Maybe I was distracted by new music I was hearing by somebody else.

Somewhere out there a die-hard Ryan Adams fan probably feels the same way about Ben Folds, Josh Rouse or Elvis Costello.

Movin’ like the fog on the Cumberland River
I was leaving on the Delta Queen
I wasn’t ready to go
I’m never ready to go
Twenty-seven years of nothin’ but failures and promises that I couldn’t keep
Oh Lord, I wasn’t ready to go
I’m never ready to go

Let it ride
Let it ride easy down the road
Let it ride
Let it take away all of the darkness
Let it ride
Let it rock me in the arms of strangers
angels until it brings me home
Let it ride
Let it roll
Let it go

Loaded like a sailor stumbling off the ferry boat
I was at the bar ’til 3:00
Oh Lord, and I wasn’t ready to go
I’m never ready to go
Tennessee’s a brother to my sister Carolina
Where they’re gonna bury me
And I ain’t ready to go
I’m never ready to go

Let it ride
Let it ride easy down the road
Let it ride
Let it take away all of this darkness
Let it ride
Let it rock me in the arms of strangers
angels until it brings me home
Let it ride
Let it roll
Let it go

I wanna see you tonight
Dancing in the endless moonlight
In the parking lot, in the headlights of cars
Someplace over the moon
Where they moved the drive-in theater
Where I left the car that I can’t find
That I still got the keys to

Let it ride
Let it ride easy down the road
Let it ride
Let it take away all of this darkness
Let it ride
Let it rock me in the arms of strangers
angels until it brings me home
Let it ride
Let it roll
Let it go

I like some of what I’ve heard from Adams, but it hasn’t really hooked me in. Today’s song does little to make me seek out more.

  2. Shawn says:

Pretty good, actually. Love to see Wilco do stuff like this again.
