Song of the Day #1,421: ‘Breathless’ – The Corrs

To some degree, I have embraced the era of the single. While I still consider myself an “album guy” and wouldn’t consider not buying the latest album by any of my favorite artists, I have warmed up to the idea of owning individual songs.

This flies in the face of my vehement anti-’greatest hits’ stance, because what is a collection of unrelated songs by a single artist if not a greatest hits collection? But my objection to those records has always been that they rob a listener of the deep album cuts that are often even better than the hits. I guess I’ve finally gotten around to acknowledging that sometimes (with some artists) the hits are all you need.

And so it is that I have three tunes by The Corrs in my iTunes collection. Two are covers (a live rendition of Ryan Adam’s ‘When the Stars Go Blue’ performed with Bono, and a tribute album performance of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’) and the other is the Irish band’s biggest stateside hit, ‘Breathless.’

I suspect I don’t need to hear anything else by The Corrs — not the rest of their pop crossover album In Blue, on which this song appeared, nor their more Celtic-influenced early albums. But this song is a perfect little 90s pop gem, the kind of thing that plays over a montage in a cheesy romantic comedy.

Maybe I’m missing out on track eight of In Blue, an obscure song with life-changing depth and nuance. I can live with that.

Go on, go on, leave me breathless
Come on…

The daylight’s fading slowly
but time with you is standing still
I’m waiting for you only
The slightest touch and I’ll feel weak

I cannot lie
From you I cannot hide
and I’m losing the will to try
Can’t hide it (can’t hide it)
Can’t fight it (can’t fight it)
So…

Go on, go on, come on leave me breathless
Tempt me, tease me until I can’t deny this
loving feeling, make me long for your kiss
Go on, go on
Yeah, come on…

And if there’s no tomorrow
And all we have is here and now
I’m happy just to have you
You’re all the love I need somehow

It’s like a dream
Although I’m not asleep
and I never want to wake up
Don’t lose it (don’t lose it)
Don’t leave it (don’t leave it)

so Go on, go on, come on leave me breathless
Tempt me, tease me until I can’t deny this
loving feeling, make me long for your kiss
Go on, go on
Yeah, come on…

And I can’t lie
From you I cannot hide
and I’ve lost my will to try
Can’t hide it (can’t hide it)
Can’t fight it (can’t fight it)
So…

Go on, go on, come on leave me breathless
Tempt me, tease me until I can’t deny this
loving feeling, make me long for your kiss
Go on, go on
Yeah, come on…

Go on, go on, come on leave me breathless (leave me breathless)

Never heard this song before. Never need to hear it again. Probably can live a full life without ever hearing from this Wilson Phillips knockoff band.

Yes, I can just hear this playing in one of those “cheesy romantic comedies” probably starring Katherine Heigl :)

Glad to see you’ve crossed over to the dark side ;) I think Dana is a bit hard on this delightful pop tune. While it’s nothing I’d “need” to hear again, I certainly find it pleasant enough. On the other hand, the pop song/single I can’t stop listening to is “Payphone.” Could this song be any more addictive?!
