Song of the Day #1,332: ‘Creep’ – Stone Temple Pilots

Best 90s Artists – #9
Stone Temple Pilots

In the universe of 90s grunge bands, Nirvana is the favorite son and Stone Temple Pilots are the the red-headed stepchild. STP enjoyed a ton of commercial success but never received the critical acclaim of their counterparts.

In fact, they were often dismissed as imitators of Nirvana’s sound, even though both bands came up around the same time. Today’s song, ‘Creep,’ certainly sounds like it could be by Nirvana. Or maybe ‘Lithium’ sounds like it could be by Stone Temple Pilots?

Songs like these embrace the slow verse/shouted chorus style that typified alternative rock in the 90s. They give you the chance to sway and thrash in equal measure. This is also the sort of song that had my generation’s parents shaking their heads the way their parents shook their heads over Elvis and The Beatles. Lord knows what my kids will play that gets me going.

Stone Temple Pilots is perfect for the iTunes world. I really like a handful of their songs — ‘Interstate Love Song,’ ‘Plush,’ ‘Big Empty,’ ‘Vasoline’ and today’s SOTD — but as far as I can tell everything else they recorded was crap. But I’ll take five great songs any day.

Forward yesterday
Makes me wanna stay
What they said was real
Makes me wanna steal
Livin’ under house
Guess I’m livin’, I’m a mouse
All’s I gots is time
Got no meaning, just a rhyme

Take time with a wounded hand
‘Cause it likes to heal
Take time with a wounded hand
‘Cause I like to steal
Take time with a wounded hand
‘Cause it likes to heal, I like to steal

I’m half the man I used to be
This I feel as the dawn
It fades to gray
Well, I’m half the man I used to be
This I feel as the dawn
It fades to gray
Well, I’m half the man I used to be
This I feel as the dawn
It fades to gray
Well, I’m half the man I used to be, half the man I used to be

Feelin’ uninspired
Think I’ll start a fire
Everybody run
Bobby’s got a gun
Think you’re kinda neat
Then she tells me I’m a creep
Friends don’t mean a thing
Guess I’ll leave it up to me

Take time with a wounded hand
‘Cause it likes to heal
Take time with a wounded hand
Guess I like to steal
Take time with a wounded hand
‘Cause it likes to heal, I like to steal

I’m half the man I used to be
This I feel as the dawn
It fades to gray
I’m half the man I used to be
This I feel as the dawn
It fades to gray
I’m half the man I used to be
This I feel as the dawn
It fades to gray
I’m half the man I used to be, half the man I used to be

Take time with a wounded hand
‘Cause it likes to heal
Take time with a wounded hand
Guess I like to steal
Take time with a wounded hand
‘Cause it likes to heal, I like to steal

I’m half the man I used to be
This I feel as the dawn
It fades to gray
I’m half the man I used to be
This I feel as the dawn
It fades to gray
I’m half the man I used to be
This I feel as the dawn
It fades to gray
I’m half the man I used to be, half the man I used to be,
Half the man I used to be

As little as I know of Nirvana beyond their few “hits,” I know even less from STP. Never heard today’s song before, but it’s not bad–the “thrashy” chorus isn’t really all that thrashy.

I don’t recognize the other songs you referenced by title, though perhaps I would know them if I heard them.

When I first saw the title, I was excited, as I thought it was the first song I recognized in this week of 90’s songs. Alas, this is not the “Creep” with which I’m familiar. So it turns out I don’t know any of the music considered to be the best of the 90’s. Makes sense I guess. I was busy getting married, starting a career, raising a baby… feature a few songs from The Wiggles, and I’ll be all over them!

If and when The Voice or The Sing-Off has a 90’s theme week, maybe I’ll catch up on these gems. After all, I wouldn’t know my other “Creep” (by Radiohead) if not for those shows! ;)
