Song of the Day #1,317: ‘Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright’ – Chloe Katerndahl

Theme weeks are a song-of-the-day blogger’s best friend. They allow you to come up with material in batches rather than piecing thoughts together one post at a time. I can knock out five theme posts in the time that it takes me to select and write a couple of standalones.

So I’m always on the lookout for a new theme week.

Recently I was thinking about how often I hear that somebody likes Bob Dylan’s songs but hates his voice so I decided to troll YouTube for Dylan covers. Specifically, Bob Dylan songs covered by cute girls. Now that sounds like a theme week.

As it turns out, I dug up enough material for a theme month. I already have 20 in the can and I’m sure I’m missing plenty more. There’s something about Dylan’s songs that’s particularly appealing to women sitting in front of a webcam with an acoustic guitar and a dream.

I don’t plan to post them all at once, of course, but I’ll go with a week’s worth now and return to the well when I’m running low on ideas. Consider these a “break glass in case of emergency” option.

First up is Chloe Katerndahl, who does a nice job interpreting one of my favorite Dylan tracks, ‘Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright.’ Katerndahl shoots all of her videos while sitting on her bed in front of a wall of posters featuring things like Johnny Cash, The Beatles and A Clockwork Orange. If I could beam her videos back in time to my high school self, he’d die of a heart attack.

Curiously, all of her clips seem to have been shot with a mirror-image effect for some reason, so while it appears she is playing the guitar left-handed, that isn’t really the case.

It ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It don’t matter, anyhow
An’ it ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don’t know by now
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I’ll be gone
You’re the reason I’m trav’lin’ on
Don’t think twice, it’s all right

It ain’t no use in turnin’ on your light, babe
That light I never knowed
An’ it ain’t no use in turnin’ on your light, babe
I’m on the dark side of the road
Still I wish there was somethin’ you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talkin’ anyway
So don’t think twice, it’s all right

It ain’t no use in callin’ out my name, gal
Like you never did before
It ain’t no use in callin’ out my name, gal
I can’t hear you anymore
I’m a-thinkin’ and a-wond’rin’ all the way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I’m told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don’t think twice, it’s all right

I’m walkin’ down that long, lonesome road, babe
Where I’m bound, I can’t tell
But goodbye’s too good a word, gal
So I’ll just say fare thee well
I ain’t sayin’ you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don’t mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don’t think twice, it’s all right

Well, this is a cool concept for a theme week. I wonder if this will appeal to Maddie as she loves these you-tubers:)

This is a nice cover, though I personally just love Dylan’s voice in the original of this song.

Now, for your next theme week–perhaps you should seek out men doing Joni Mitchell covers or women doing Rufus Wainwright covers:)
