Song of the Day #1,118: ‘Love is a Battlefield’ – Cee-Lo Green & Vicci Martinez

One of the neat aspects of The Voice was seeing the coaches and contestants perform together. During the first few weeks of the series they performed as teams but once they were down to the final four, we were treated to duets by each coach and his or her one remaining singer.

Dia Frampton and Blake Shelton delivered a charming but mostly forgettable rendition of Tom Petty’s ‘I Won’t Back Down.’ Adam Levine and Javier Colon traded falsettos while singing Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror,’ a song they both love but I hate. And Christina Aguilera and Beverly McLellan performed a lovely acoustic version of Aguilera’s moving ‘Beautiful’ with Linda Perry, the song’s writer, accompanying on guitar.

But the show saved the best for last.

Cee-Lo Green had compared Vicci Martinez’s woman-on-a-rampage style to Pat Benatar before and he took the opportunity to make that connection explicit. Donning one of his trademark wild costumes (this one looking like something out of Tarsem’s The Cell), Green turned the stage into a fire and brimstone recreation of Benatar’s video for ‘Love is a Battlefield.’

He left the rest up to Martinez, who brought down the house like a real rock goddess.

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
NO PROMISES, NO DEMANDS
Love Is A Battlefield
We are strong, no one can tell us we’re wrong
Searchin’ our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love Is A Battlefield

You’re beggin’ me to go, you’re makin’ me stay
Why do you hurt me so bad?
It would help me to know
Do I stand in your way, or am I the best thing you’ve had?
Believe me, believe me, I can’t tell you why
But I’m trapped by your love, and I’m chained to your side

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
NO PROMISES, NO DEMANDS
Love Is A Battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us we’re wrong
Searchin’ our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love Is A Battlefield

We’re losing control
Will you turn me away or touch me deep inside?
And before this gets old, will it still feel the same?
There’s no way this will die
But if we get much closer, I could lose control
And if your heart surrenders, you’ll need me to hold

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
NO PROMISES, NO DEMANDS
Love Is A Battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us we’re wrong
Searchin’ our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love Is A Battlefield

I loved everything about this performance, which should be provided as an example whenever somebody wonders why it’s important to commit wholeheartedly if one chooses to attempt something bold or outrageous.

From the kids to the costumes to the fire on stage to Vicci’s black smudge under her eye, and, especially, to the choreography, it all worked. In an earlier interview, Vicci was practically giddy when she was describing what Cee-Lo had prepared for them. I love that though she didn’t place first or second, she at least got to share this moment with her mentor. And I love how serious Cee-Lo is from start to finish. The man can inhabit a part! :)

Ditto as to what both of you said. Great performance.
