#7 – ‘I’m a Slave 4 U’ – Brittany
Most great ‘Glee’ performances start off as great songs, with the cast putting its unique twist on some old classic or new hit.
But sometimes even a crappy song can turn into a great ‘Glee’ moment. A performance of Rebecca Black’s ‘Friday’ in the prom episode comes to mind… somehow they turned that joke of a song into an ironic, infectious party anthem.
I don’t like Britney Spears’ ‘I’m a Slave 4 U’ at all (or any Britney Spears song, for that matter) but Heather Morris, who does a superb job playing the hilarious dim bulb Brittany, turned it into a sexy highlight. Morris is used more as comic relief than as a singer or dancer but given her chance to strut her stuff in the Britney Spears episode, she proved more than up to the challenge.
Overall, I found this to be one of the worst episodes of the season (probably the very worst). It was a series of music video recreations with no connective tissue, and the music isn’t good to begin with. But Brittany’s opening dream sequence was something to behold.
And I need to do what I feel like doing.

I agree that this was the worst episode by the far. Halfway through I thought that Glee had jumped the shark. Still, I also agree that had Brittany’s dream sequence been the only such “music video” in the episode, I would reflect on it more fondly than I do. I also can fully understand why it is even more appealing to the men in the audience. I read recently that Heather Morris got into even better shape (if that’s possible) after learning that this would be one of the first episodes she shot this season.
I love her story. Initially hired as a choreographer and background dancer, her sense of humor and interplay with the other cast members caused Ryan Murphy to cast her as one of the cheerleaders, though he didn’t anticipate that she’d have much of a speaking part. Her dancing is still a highlight of the show, of course, but its her delivery of those wonderful Brittanyisms that makes her truly special.
Can’t imagine that this song would be on my top 10 of the season, but Brittany herself is definitiely one of my favorite characters.
Oh, come on, Clay!
This pick is so clearly being made from parts far south of your brain. This was, as you conceded, the worst episode of Glee ever, featuring lame Spears music in a wholly forced fashion. And, while Amy was being magnanimous to suggest that this particular number would have been better if it were the only music video on that episode, this is a bit like saying that the meal would have tasted better if only part of it were covered with poop.
The ONLY redeeming thing in this video is that Heather Morris looks hot and sexy. The song still sucks and didn’t work any better in this episode than any other Spears song in that episode (save for the eye candy).
I can’t believe this song is on your top 10 for season two. For shame, Clay, for shame.
I freely admit that I like this scene for reasons that have nothing to do with musical taste. But it’s certainly one of the scenes I best remember from the season. And it’s the best example of Heather Morris’ talents (in every sense of the word) that the show has yet offered (not counting her expert comic timing, of course… I’m talking about her dance/music talents).
I did not see this episode, I recall I turned it off because it was so bad. At any rate, it’s interesting to hear her story and how she came to be one of the stars. I, too, enjoy her humor, and while this would not be one of my top 10 picks, I can understand why it’s yours 🙂
Well, Brittany S. Pierce is completely hilarious and endearing, and her innocence (versus stupidity) often leads to some surprisingly touching moments. That said, I agree that this was the worst episode of the season (both seasons, actually), but three things became abundantly clear from this particular song/video:
1) Heather Morris has a smokin’ hot body – I mean, seriously, how do you get a body like that??? I don’t know if I could buy enough personal training sessions or eat healthy enough food to get abs like hers.
2) Heather Morris can DANCE!! I already knew that from other episodes and her resume as a back-up dancer for Beyonce (ahem, Clay)… but this showcase for her amazing dancing was mesmerizing.
3) Heather Morris can SING!!! This was the biggest surprise for me as it was the first time she was featured in a solo since becoming a series regular. I was really impressed that she had some serious chops.
I am glad you copped to including this in the countdown for non-musical motives, but if you felt like you wanted to feature the best song from the episode (that would be a nice countdown, by the way – the best song from each episode of Glee) my vote would have gone to “Toxic.” That whole scene was hilarious and included the entire cast. Some of your readers may not have seen it because it was at the end of the episode, but it was a pretty entertaining moment in an otherwise lackluster episode.
